About The Wine

“The team of the Cazes family have done wonders with this estate, and they continue to deliver incredible quality in just about every vintage.” ~ Jeb Dunnuck

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous red wine appellation in the Southern Rhône — a sun-drenched stretch of ancient vineyards between Orange and Avignon where the papal court once made its home. The wines here are bold, aromatic, and deeply complex: think ripe dark fruit, wild herbs, black pepper, and earth, with a structure that rewards years in the cellar. If you love big, flavorful reds from Napa or the Northern Rhône, Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the natural next step.

Domaine des Sénéchaux is one of the oldest estates in the appellation, with roots stretching back centuries to the lieu-dit known as Bois Séneseau — the Sheriff's Wood. Under the leadership of the Cazes family — owners of the legendary Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux — Sénéchaux has become one of the most reliable and celebrated names in the region.

The 2022 vintage is among the estate's best on record. The wine blends Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and small amounts of Cinsault and Vaccarèse from vineyards spread across the appellation. Winemaker Bernard Tranchecoste ages the wine in a combination of old French oak barrels, large foudres, and cement vats — a method that preserves freshness and terroir while adding structure and depth.

The result is Chateauneuf at its most complete: rich and spicy on the nose, refined and balanced on the palate, with the kind of length that marks a wine worth holding.

Deep ruby with bright violet reflections. The nose opens with layers of garrigue, pine, sage, and fresh strawberry, giving way to darker notes of ripe cherry, dried thyme, black olive, and cracked black pepper.

On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied with beautifully integrated tannins and lively acidity. Red and dark berries dominate the mid-palate, supported by earthy, herb-driven undertones and a long, stony finish. Drink from 2025 through 2036; decanting is recommended.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Power, structure and freshness are united in this stunning, modern Chateauneuf-du-Pape that has stacks of Mediterranean herb and raw meat character. Excellent concentration and energy. The elegantly dry finish is very long and precisely contoured. Sustainable. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Suckling

The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Domaine des Senechaux offers up aromas of fresh thyme, garrigue, spices and pepper. It has a medium to full-bodied, round and layered palate framed by a fleshy core of fruit and velvety tannins, followed by a concentrated, well-balanced mid-palate that segues into a fresh, long and mineral finish. This blend of 58% Grenache Noir, 24% Syrah and 18% Mourvèdre was partially destemmed and matured for nine months in foudres (80%) and 12 months in used barrels (20%). It's a commendable effort and marks the domaine as one to watch. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wild strawberry, garrigue, cured meat and licorice present the 2022 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a full-bodied and spicy rendition of this reliable red Chateauneuf. Balanced by fresh acidity, the savory 2022 is totally inviting and easygoing, yet it also packs sufficient structure for extended bottle-aging. ~ 92 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Domaine des Senechaux

Domaine des Sénéchaux is one of the oldest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with origins dating back to the 14th century. Now owned by the Cazes family since 2006, the estate spans roughly 25–27 hectares of stony, gravel-rich vineyards that produce classic Southern Rhône blends dominated by Grenache, along with Syrah and Mourvèdre. Known for balancing power and elegance, its wines reflect the region’s signature warmth, layered fruit, and structured tannins, making it a benchmark producer within the appellation.
