About the Wine
When a family has been working with Pinot Noir for four generations, it’s safe to say they understand the grape and all it’s capable of. For the past 100 years, the Shug Family has produced Pinot Noir, first in Germany and then—since 1980—in California. The winery is known for its world-class wines made from the grape.
Their Rosé of Pinot Noir is crafted in the German style of a Weissherbst or “white harvest”, a delicate rosé wine made from red grapes. The style starts with red wine grapes that begin fermentation with the skins on for a short while before removing the skins. The method gives the wine its pink hue. The grapes for this Schug rosé are hand-harvested at night, then pressed cold with minimal skin contact, resulting in a wine that is refreshingly light and dry with vibrant acidity.
The grapes for this refreshing rosé come from the Ricci Vineyard, a family-run vineyard on the outskirts of Sonoma and in the heart of Carneros. Shug has worked with Ricci for 20 years, sourcing from the highly-sought after grape growers for several of the winery’s fine wines.
This rosé is a reminder of the great versatility that Pinot Noir has to offer. Enjoy this sophisticated rosé with poached salmon, roasted chicken, or a charcuterie platter.
Tasting notes: 100% Pinot Noir. Refreshingly light with favors of alpine strawberry and white peach. Finishes dry and crisp with vibrant acidity.
Reviews
Cold fermented in stainless-steel tanks, this is one stunning rosé, and we’ve tasted our fair share this year. Rose and raspberry scent the glass, while cherry and pomegranate are inviting on the palate, with jasmine kicking in midway. A refreshing floral bloom, the wine is part creamy, part stony, but streamlined and pure all the way. ~93 Tasting Panel.
A pale peach-colored rosé with aromas of raspberries, wild strawberries, pomegranate, and rose petals. It’s medium-bodied, fresh, and fruity. Creamy and delicious finish. Dry. ~92 James Suckling.
Tasting of watermelon candy in all the right ways, this crisp, light, and well-made wine are layered in additional flavors of strawberry, orange, and grapefruit: simple and straightforward in approach, with just enough sophistication to keep it interesting. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
