About The Wine

In 1979, Gault-Millau set up a blind tasting in Paris and lined up the most famous Cabernets in the world. First place went to a wine from Spain, from its very first vintage. Chateau Latour 1970 finished behind it. That wine was Mas La Plana.

Miguel A. Torres planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the family's Mas La Plana vineyard in 1966, a few years after joining the winery his family founded in 1870. He brought temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation to Spanish winemaking. The 1970 went out under a black label as Gran Coronas, and from the 1995 vintage on, the wine carried the vineyard's name.

The vineyard sits in Pacs del Penedes: 29 hectares in ten plots, loamy soil on the lower slopes and marl higher up. The vines are old now, and only the best parcels go into this bottle. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

I'd argue this is the best Cabernet made in Spain. Decant it for an hour if you open it now. Better yet, put a few away and open one every few years.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Broad and bountiful, with lashings of damson, plum, black cherry and chocolate flavour lavishing the rounded texture and chalky tannins. Cedar and sandalwood adorn the finish. ~95 Decanter

A well-tailored red, with enticing aromas of bay leaf, anise and wild herbs, plus a beam of ripe black currant. Medium- to full-bodied but not bulky, with a limber feel to the sculpted tannins. Rich hints of espresso, minerally slate and smoke, dark chocolate and white pepper echo on the fresh, focused finish. Drink now through 2040. 6,000 cases made, 325 cases imported. ~94 Wine Spectator

A savory wine with good complexity. Fine ripe cabernet character. Rich red currants, berries, paprika, sweet tobacco, spices and minerals, with a medium body and fine tannins that slowly grow toward a firm and lengthy finish. Drink from 2026. ~93 James Suckling
