About The Wine

Villa Maria Estate has been making wine in New Zealand since 1961, back when the country's reputation for Pinot Noir was still decades away from being written. Founded by Sir George Fistonich, the estate now farms vineyards across Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, and Auckland — and in 2012, won New Zealand's supreme Sustainable Business Network Award.

This Reserve Pinot Noir pulls fruit from three Marlborough vineyards: one in the cooler Awatere Valley for aromatics, two in the Southern Valleys sub-region of the Wairau for concentration. Deep clay soils anchor structure; the estate's minimalist winemaking lets the fruit speak. Nine months in French oak, then into bottle.

The 2020 vintage delivered what Marlborough does best: dry, mild summer days with high sunshine, cool nights, and a stable early autumn that let the fruit ripen slowly. Lower yields meant flavor and concentration packed into every grape. The result is a wine that readily opens to perfumed red fruits — strawberry, raspberry, plum, cherry — with floral lift and a hint of portabello mushroom at mid-palate. Medium-bodied, bright acidity, soft velvety tannins, a long finish.

It's my pick for roast duck on a Wednesday, or alongside wild mushroom risotto when you want Pinot Noir that drinks above its weight without asking you to decode it.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Complex and detailed bouquet with scents of ripe red berry fruit and kitchen cupboard spices, sweet toasty French oak and suggestions of dark plum and black currant. Youthful, complex and enticing. On the palate - a core of red berry fruit flavours fill the palate first contrasted by acidity and an abundance of tannins. A chalky texture and salivating mouthfeel contrast flavours of berries and plum, clove and vanilla, some wood smoke and stony earth qualities. An excellent example, balanced and well made with best drinking from late 2022/early 2023 through 2029+. ~ 94 Douglas Cameron

This has aromas of bark, bramble, ripe cherries, cloves, thyme and ash. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and bright acidity. Excellent precision with some toasty spice complexity to the berry fruit. Sustainable. Drink now or hold. Screw cap. ~92 James Suckling
