About The Wine

Tucked high in the Andes lies Gualtallary, a hidden gem in Mendoza—and what James Suckling calls "Mendoza's Montrachet." It's one of the highest-altitude winegrowing regions in Argentina, known for its limestone-rich soils and intense sunlight. Today, Gualtallary stands among the most acclaimed terroirs in the world, producing wines with striking elegance, purity, and depth.

The Zuccardi family has built a deserved reputation across the wine industry. Founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963, the family business operates six estates strategically placed across Mendoza's finest terroirs. For three consecutive years, Zuccardi Valle de Uco has been named "The Best Vineyard in the World" by William Reed Business Media.

The 2020 growing season was exceptional—cool and dry, with below-average temperatures and significant thermal amplitude. Grapes developed excellent natural acidity, well-structured tannins, and concentrated fruit flavors without excessive ripeness. The result is a Malbec that captures everything the variety can be at altitude.

Deep, racy aromas of cherries, berries, hibiscus, peppercorns and violets with a touch of peach pits. Full-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity, offering flavors of ripe black fruits, a mineral core from the calcareous soils, and a long, textured finish. Harmonious, with chiseled, melted tannins and an extremely long finish that goes on and on.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Blending three parcels brimming in calcareous soils, one with red caliche, one with white caliche, at 4,462-feet elevation, the 2020 Malbec Finca Las Cerrilladas explodes in white pepper and herb, evoking the natural vegetation that grows around the high-altitude site. Giving, lengthy, and complex, it's a remarkably memorable, complex, and intriguing wine that leaves an undeniable impression. Outstanding in every way, it will age 20-30 years with ease. ~ 100 Jeb Dunnuck

A beautiful malbec that shows everything you want from the variety. Deep, racy aromas of cherries, berries, hibiscus, peppercorns and violets with a touch of peach pits. So harmonious, with chiseled, melted tannins and an extremely long finish that goes on and on. Drink or hold. ~98 James Suckling

The 2020 Finca Las Cerrilladas has gentler tannins than the 2019; this is different but still very balanced and serious, with the subtle aromas of the wild herbs and flowers, the thyme and rockrose, the grainy tannins and the chalky sensation. This feels every bit as good as the initial 2019. They played with the different plots and found that, in a warmer year like 2020, they used more grapes from plots with pink caliche stone—a formation of dissolved limestone and clay somewhat similar to marl—and less from shallower soils and slopes where they have goblet pruning. It even feels subtler than the 2019... 5,900 bottles were filled in June 2021. ~98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2020 Malbec Finca Las Cerrilladas hails from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. The ripe nose presents plum, sage and other mountain herbs, resulting in a balsamic, reductive aromatic profile. Muscular and fleshy on the palate, the taut, chalky flow and balanced juicy acidity make for a velvety but spare mouthfeel before the long finish of rose and lavender. This nuanced, energetic Malbec gets the best out of a warm vintage. ~97 Vinous Media

A subtly powerful red, this opens with graphite, olive and floral elements and builds on those notes, adding citrus-accented cherry and plum flavors that swell around minerally acidity. Lingers on the finish, with hints of eucalyptus and cassis chiming in around structured, minerally tannins. Drink now through 2035. 500 cases made, 450 cases imported. ~95 Wine Spectator
