About The Wine

David Arthur Estate Three Acre sits above the fogline at over one thousand feet on Napa's eastern slopes, where extended sunlight hours push grapes toward ripe-fruit expression and the elevation delivers the structure serious Cabernet demands. This is hillside fruit with dimension — the kind that separates cellar-worthy wine from the valley floor's soft center.

Clone 337 is the rising star in David's vineyard, and it shows. Small, thick-skinned berries deliver a high skin-to-must ratio during maceration, building concentration and grip without extraction. Twenty months in blue-chip French Oak — eighty percent new — gives the wine its spine of baking spices and toasted aromatics, but the fruit stays front and the oak integrates rather than dominates.

The 2021 is fullbodied and fruit-expressive, built on gripping tannins and organically grown grapes. Deep ruby-violet in the glass. The nose opens with earthy spice, lightly toasted oak, vanilla bean and baking spices, then black cherry, raspberry, rose petals and hints of citrus rind. The palate is focused yet broad, with chewy fine-grained tannins and flavors of cherry fruit cake, cassis and cocoa nibs. James Suckling called it brilliant and balanced, citing delicious creme de cassis on a sleek texture backed by fine-grained tannins — fresh, linear, concentrated and subtly accented by oak spices. 94 points.

This is Napa Cabernet built for the cellar or the table tonight. The structure will hold a decade-plus; the fruit is expressive enough to drink now if you give it an hour in the decanter. Three-bottle format lets you open one and put two down.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A brilliant and balanced red with delicious creme de cassis flavors on a sleek texture backed by fine-grained tannins. Aged in 80% new French barrels, it tastes fresh, linear, concentrated and subtly accented by oak spices. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Compact but juicy, with cherry and red currant coulis notes that are nicely compressed, plus apple wood and singed red tea hints. A mineral edge helps extend the finish. Drink now through 2036. 1,635 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

David Arthur Estate

David Arthur Estate is a family-owned winery perched on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, founded by the Long family, who began visiting the Napa Valley in the 1950s when Don Long, a butcher by trade, started investing in real estate that grew into nearly 1,000 acres atop Pritchard Hill. Don and his son David Arthur Long planted the first vines in 1978, converting a small barn into a winery, with the inaugural vintage released in 1985 — the same year David's daughter Laura Annalyce Long was born, who now co-runs the estate with her father. The estate is best known for its high-elevation Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, notably its flagship wine Elevation 1147, along with three Bordeaux-style blends incorporating Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Nebbiolo. The vineyards sit high above the northeastern end of Napa Valley with breathtaking views of the valley floor 1,200 feet below, in rocky volcanic soils with a unique microclimate of warm days and cool nights that stresses the vines and concentrates flavor — neighboring some of Napa's most prestigious cult producers on Pritchard Hill, including Bryant, Colgin, Continuum, and Ovid.
