About The Wine

Two of Burgundy's most respected winemakers—Anne Gros of Vosne-Romanee and Jean-Paul Tollot of Chorey-les-Beaune—traveled 575 kilometers south in 2006 looking for happy vineyards and sunnier light. They found both in Cazelles, a hamlet in the eastern Minervois hills, and acquired parcels that included Carignan vines planted in 1904. The "50/50" reflects their equal partnership from field to cellar, though Gros admits she handles the administrative load while they split viticulture and vinification decisions on their twice-monthly trips from Burgundy.

This cuvee blends roughly 35% Syrah (25 years old), 35% Carignan (some from that 1904 parcel, some planted 50 years ago), and 30% Grenache replanted twelve years back—all from sandstone, marl, and clay-limestone soils. The tramontane and sea winds keep the fruit fresh despite the southern sun, and the couple farms organically (not yet certified), hand-picking and destemming everything in the Burgundian style before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel on indigenous yeasts.

The 2021 opens with meaty garrigue lift—thyme, rosemary, violets—over deep plummy fruit and bright black cherry. The palate shows pomegranate, cranberry, a whisper of barberry, and peppery spice, carried by silky tannins and the kind of bright acidity Burgundy winemakers instinctively chase. There's a fine, smooth grip on the finish and enough structure to reward five or six years in the cellar, though it's already vibrant and supple now.

The kind of wine that makes you wonder why you've been paying double for less interesting bottles. Serve it with a slight chill through summer or pull the cork now and watch it evolve over the next half-decade.

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Anne Gros & Jean-Paul Tollot

Domaine Anne Gros & Jean-Paul Tollot is a collaboration between two respected Burgundy winemakers who brought their experience and distinctive styles to the rugged landscape of Minervois in southern France. Founded in 2008, the estate is built around carefully selected vineyards in Cazelles, where old vines, limestone-rich soils, and the region’s Mediterranean climate create wines with impressive depth and freshness. Their approach combines Burgundy-inspired precision with the warmth and character of the Languedoc, resulting in expressive, structured wines that showcase the unique terroir of Minervois.
