About The Wine

Most people who avoid Riesling are avoiding the wrong wine. The Boeckel Wiebelsberg is bone dry — mineral and taut, closer to a structured Chablis than anything sweet — with the kind of savory persistence you only get from old vines in a classified Grand Cru site.

Domaine Boeckel has farmed the hillsides above Mittelbergheim since 1853, now five generations in under Jean-Daniel and Thomas Boeckel. They work 23 hectares of certified organic vineyards (ECOCERT) along the Alsatian Route des Vins.

The Wiebelsberg Grand Cru lies in neighboring Andlau — steep Triassic sandstone slopes at full south exposure, a site that earned its place in the official Alsace Grand Cru classification as far back as 1852.

The 2021 was harvested by hand from vines averaging 50 years old, fermented slowly, and aged on the full lees through July 2022. Extended time in large traditional foudres followed, with bottling in December 2023 — this wine was not rushed. Vinous called it "tight, still young and intense, well-concentrated and tensioned" with excellent aging capacity. Drink it now with rich, buttery fish, or leave it alone for another five to ten years.

100% Riesling from the Grand Cru Wiebelsberg, Andlau, Alsace.

The nose opens with ripe stone fruit — peach, apricot, papaya — layered with ginger, spice, and caramel, all rooted in the mineral undertow of the sandstone terroir.

The palate is bright and fruit-driven with vivid acidity, building to a richness before drying out on a long, characterful finish.

Full-bodied and focused, with the mineral tension and excellent aging capacity.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Riesling Wiebelsberg Grand Cru is from Boeckel's substantial 2.5-hectare plot, two of which are contiguous right in the heart of Wiebelsberg. Boeckel says, "This is not Riesling; this is Wiebelsberg." The nose combines nettle and flinty reduction to delicious effect. The fruit is of crushed white currant, star fruit, juicy and bright but with a tropical edge. The palate is serene, clear, smooth and absolutely linear, cushioning its exquisite freshness with notions of green banana, moss, nettle and a whole lot of greenish creaminess. The 2021 is a great, fine-boned, elegant and unusual Riesling from a site that deserves far more attention. (Bone-Dry)~ 96 Vinous Media

From a steep sandstone site, the 2021 Riesling Grand Cru Wiebelsberg was aged on the lees until July of the following year, then was filtered and aged in large oak vats until the bottling in December 2023. Based on averaging 50-year-old vines, this is a full-bodied, elegant and persistently savory Riesling with a tight, still young and intense, well-concentrated and tensioned finish. This has excellent aging capacity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2024 ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Aromas of ripe stone fruit with tropical hints and notes of spices and caramel. Medium-bodied, bright and fruit-driven with vivid acidity. Juicy and characterful with a flavorful finish and medium length. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. ~91 James Suckling

This starts out with spicy ginger and stone notes, before the papaya and apricot flavors emerge on the palate. It has nice intensity and it builds to a richness before drying on the finish. A classic style with good verve. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
