About The Wine

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best-known producers in Alsace, with a winegrowing lineage stretching back to 1620. The domaine was created in 1959 when Leonard Humbrecht married Genevieve Zind, and today it's run by Olivier Humbrecht — the first Frenchman to qualify as Master of Wine. Forty hectares of estate vineyards, farmed biodynamically since the early days, with yields held to 30-40 hectoliters per hectare. That level of rigor is the entire house in one number.

Clos Jebsal is one of the domaine's most esteemed parcels, a walled vineyard where Pinot Gris finds profound expression. The 2021 marks the new, dry era of Clos Jebsal — consistently vinified dry since 2020, a decisive shift from the richer, sweeter style the site was known for. This is Pinot Gris at its most serious: structured, mineral-driven, built for the cellar.

In the glass: radiant, deep golden yellow. Intense yeast spice, apples, quinces and dried apricots, complemented by a seductive saline note and walnut. Plenty of richness and juicy fruit on the palate, delicate salinity, invigorating acidity and peppery tannins — powerful yet fresh, with a long, mineral finish. Outstanding aging potential.

James Suckling scored it 97 points. Bottled in January 2023, the wine is still tightly wound and will reward patience.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Hang on to your hat! Here's a dense and dangerous wine for a grape most wine drinkers think can only give no-brainers. Very compact and structured with a dark personality that some may find shocking, but what makes it that way is the gypsum marl minerality that is its soul. Brain-rattling freshness at the super stony finish. ~97 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht only produces wines from its own vineyards. The domaine has total vineyard holdings of around 40 hectares (99 acres). Zind-Humbrecht took a pioneering role in producing Alsace wines in concentrated, fruity style using low yields (around 30-40 hectoliter per hectare) and biodynamic viticulture. Zind-Humbrecht introduced a sweetness index on labels from the 2001 vintage, ranging from 1 to 5. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is among the best known producers in Alsace. Producers calling themselves 'Domaine', such as Zind-Humbrecht, are supposed to only use grapes from their own vineyards. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht sells a cuvée called Zind, a blend of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Auxerrois, which is sold as Vin de table de France because it does not qualify for AOC status. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace follows biodynamic viticulture.
