About the Wine
Critics agree: This is a wine that consistently rates very highly and well above many wines that are three to five times as expensive!
The 2021 Dominus Napanook is born from the hands of one of the world's best winemakers, Christain Moueix. Needless to say, there aren't many wines like the 2021 Napanook that have this elite pedigree of champion winemaker, near-perfect vintage, and critical praise. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better drinking experience than the 2021 Napanook. Get yours while you still can.
Christian Moueix is one of the few producers to make classic wines in both the old and new worlds, Christian Moueix is President of Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, the leading wine company of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, and owner of Dominus Estate in the Napa Valley.
Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the legendary Bordeaux wine merchant, Christian was born in Libourne, France in 1946. After completing his agricultural engineering studies in Paris and graduate studies in viticulture and enology at the University of California at Davis in 1968-69, he joined Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1970 and, in 1991, became its President.
A viticulturalist at heart, Christian Moueix’s tenure has been marked by the introduction of revolutionary vineyard techniques including, from 1973, crop-thinning as a means to improve grape quality. Today he produces wine from ten family chateaux including La Fleur Petrus, Trotanoy, Hosanna, Providence in Pomerol and, Belair-Monange and Magdelaine in Saint Emilion.
In 1982, Christian Moueix formed a partnership to produce Dominus from the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, adapting his French technical approach to Californian winemaking.
The 2021 vintage received 97 points by Wine Spectator, claiming "This vintage cements the new style in Napa".
It’s worth pointing out that we do have the 2021 Dominus in stock and it scored a trifecta of 100 point scores!
Tasting Notes
92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. A delicately aromatic nose of red currants, spicebush, tobacco leaf, dusty minerals, and wildflowers. The palate is compact with a wonderful medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel and plenty of energy and drive.
Reviews
This shows a lot of class, with aromas of blackcurrants, graphite, blueberries, dried flowers, black truffles and a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with seamless tannins that goes on and on. Endless. Blackcurrants, dark mushrooms and violets with hints of fresh rose stems and light herbs. Velvety texture. A blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Better after 2027. ~97 James Suckling
The 2021 Napanook is one heck of a Napanook, offering complex notes of currants, cassis, graphite, leafy tobacco, lead pencil, and chocolate. Incredible on the palate, it s full-bodied and round, with supple, vibrant, incredible tannins. This is easily the finest vintage I've tasted of this cuv e and it s the equivalent of many a Grand Vin from other producers. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Napanook is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly emerges from the glass with expressive notes of blackcurrant pastilles, wild blueberries, and Morello cherries leading to an undercurrent of rosebud tea, cinnamon stick, and tilled soil with a waft of charcoal. The rich, concentrated, full-bodied palate delivers waves of black and blue fruit preserves supported by velvety tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and spicy. 3,000 cases were made. ~95 The Wine Palate
A delicately aromatic nose of red currants, spicebush, tobacco leaf, dusty minerals, and wildflowers. The palate is compact with a wonderful medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel and plenty of energy and drive. The acidity is firm and inviting, forming a perfect backbone that preserves the wine's freshness. The tannins are satiny with a mocha-scented quality, and the red berry fruit is laced with salty minerals. The wine is impressively tension-filled, vivacious and yet light on its feet. A terrific effort. ~94 Decanter
Certainly the best Napanook bottling I can recall, the 2021 Napanook is a 3,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Boasting harmonious aromas of raspberries, red and black cherries, cinnamon, clove and dusty earth notes, this full-bodied wine tips the scales at a declared 15% alcohol, yet it shows no detectable heat. It is full-bodied, intense, rich and velvety, with hints of black tea on the long finish. Matured in 20% new French oak, it stands out for its lush mouthfeel and savory complexity. ~94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Bright and fresh, with a streak of tobacco enlivening the core of cherry and red currant preserve flavors. A subtle accent of singed cedar runs along the edges, giving this a reserved feel. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2036. 3,000 cases made. ~93 Wine Spectator
