About The Wine

Force Majeure is the Washington and Oregon estate that earned a 100-point score from Jeb Dunnuck for its 2018 Cabernet — proof that the Walla Walla Valley vineyard adjacent to the winery is legitimate pedigree ground. Founded in 2004, the winery started with a Collaboration Series featuring the state's top winemakers before pivoting in 2014 to focus entirely on estate fruit. In 2018 they acquired two additional vineyards on the Oregon side of Walla Walla Valley and built a new winemaking facility. The commitment to place is total.

This 2021 Estate Syrah is 100 percent Syrah from that Walla Walla Valley estate — planted in the late 1990s across eight soil types, most on steep, rocky slopes. It's old-vine fruit now, and the wine shows it. Fermented 22 percent whole cluster in concrete and stainless, aged 18 months in mostly large-format French oak (25 percent new), native yeast, cold soak, macerations up to 30 days, 100 percent free run. The kind of winemaking that lets terroir speak.

Jeremy Young at International Wine Report scored it 98 points: "Scintillating... nearly perfect Syrah from The Rocks District. Evoking notes of blue plums, wild blueberries, lavender, roasted game, white grapefruit zest, and cedary herbs, it is deep and luxuriant with a velvety finish and perfect mouthwatering acidity." Jeb Dunnuck called it 93-96 points, noting "impressive red and blue fruits, graphite and chalky minerality... full-bodied, balanced, and concentrated, while staying light on its feet. It has serious tannins and will demand bottle age."

The glass delivers a broad spectrum of black, blue, and red fruits — dried herbs, jasmine, fennel, smoked meats, crushed rock. Very fine tannins, great length, balance, and complexity. Full-bodied but agile. This is Walla Walla Syrah at the top of its game. About 350 cases were made. Drink 2024–2038, and give it time — this one rewards patience.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The scintillating Estate Syrah from Force Majeure comes from The Rocks District and is another wonderful, and nearly perfect, Syrah from the area. Evoking notes of blue plums, wild blueberries, lavender, roasted game, white grapefruit zest, and cedary herbs, it is a deep and luxuriant Syrah that gifts a velvety finish and perfect mouthwatering acidity. You can’t go wrong with any of the 2021 Syrahs from Force Majeure, so pick them up if you can find them. About 350 cases were crafted. ~98 International Wine Report

The outstanding 2021 Force Majeure ‘Walla Walla Estate’ Syrah was stored for 18 months in used large format French oak before bottling. The nose comes off fragrant and very stony with wet gravel notes that combine with huckleberry, dried herbs and shades of milk chocolate. The palate is soft and seamless, with serious verve and a pillowy mouthfeel. Rich and layered, this is a gorgeous wine from this estate vineyard that is showing some serious promise. Drink 2024-2038 ~ 98 Owen Bargreen

Plums, blueberries, smoked meats, violets, and peppery, meaty, iron-like notes all emerge from the 2021 Syrah Walla Walla Estate, another incredible wine from winemaker Todd Alexander. All varietal that was fermented with 30-40% whole clusters, it's medium to full-bodied, has a beautifully pure, elegant mouthfeel, integrated tannins, and a great finish. Drink this killer bottle of wine over the coming 10-15 years. ~ 97 Jeb Dunnuck

The perfumed 2021 Syrah Walla Walla Estate wafts up with notes of incense, cedary spice and dried black cherry. Cool-toned yet velvety in feel, this impresses with a sweet-and-sour blend of wild berries. Tactile minerals emerge through the structured finish as the 2021 tapers off with hints of licorice and dark chocolate. This is the first vintage of the Walla Walla Estate Syrah, which hails from a vineyard that's half in The Rocks District and half in a parcel that contains silty loam soils. ~95 Vinous Media

The aromas of dried rose petals and sugar cookies with raspberry icing are like a genteel tea party. Then, in a gearshift—bam!—muscular tannins take control. The wall of tannins allows a glimpse of black cherry, orange zest and cinnamon stick flavors to dazzle you. The texture is a bit leathery for now. Drink now–2034. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

This strikes a beautiful balance of juicy fruit with some savory, wet-earth undertones. Medium- to full-bodied with an array of black plums, dried violets, herbs and cracked pepper, plus a touch of soy, nicely framed with tight and polished tannins. Around 35% whole cluster. Drink from 2025.~ 93 James Suckling
