About The Wine

Monferrato sits in Piedmont's rolling hills, the crossroads where Barbera's bright acidity meets Nebbiolo's structure — and this bottle proves the region punches well above its price class. La Bollina's 2021 Bricchetta blends the two grapes into a serious, oak-aged red that drinks like wines twice the cost.

La Bollina Winery is located in Serravalle Scrivia AL, Italy. A municipality in the province of Alessandria, located about 62 miles southeast of Turin. This historical territory, which specializes in DOCD Gavi, was for centuries the residence of the Marchioness Figari of Genova. A 300-acre winery, surrounded by hills and chestnut forests is the location where magnificent wines are made.

Besides having 70 acres of cultivated vineyards, an excellent and well-equipped cellar, in La Bollina you can find luxury accommodation for guests: An “Art Nouveau” style villa, a modern 4-star hotel, and a 9-hole golf course that expands throughout the vineyards.

The Bollina winery is completely renovated and has some of the most advanced techniques, systems, and instruments in modern winemaking.

Andrea Bernardini is a passionate consultant winemaker who has hit numerous home runs. He graduated from Pisa, one of the best schools of oenology in Italy, in 2007. He earned his chops at Poggio Bonelli and Ruffino in Tuscany and trained in South Africa, Romania and Greece. After several years of experience, he is now a flying winemaker blending tradition and modern techniques to obtain high-quality wines with respect to the expression of the different grapes and terroir in which he works.

The winemaking is patient: cold maceration for four days, controlled fermentation, then fourteen months in French oak barriques. That's the kind of treatment reserved for Barolo, applied here to a Monferrato Rosso at a fraction of the price.

Pull the cork for red meat, roasts, or aged cheese. This is the wine you pour when you want the depth and structure of premium Piedmont without the premium ask.

85% Barbera, 15% Nebbiolo.

Strong red in the glass with violet hints at the rim. The nose leads with blackberry, plum and fresh fruit, giving way to vanilla, spice, licorice and mocha from fourteen months in French oak barrique.

High acidity runs straight through the palate, keeping the wine fresh and lively despite the barrel time, and carrying a persistent, complex finish. Dry, full, 14%. Serve at 16–18°C.

Coffee, dried cherries, chocolate, and raisins on the nose of this ripe, rich red. It’s full-bodied and plush with a light jammy character. 85% Barbera and 15% nebbiolo. Drink now. ~ 90 James Suckling
