About the Wine

Mt. Brave is the definitive voice of Mount Veeder — Napa Valley's largest AVA, and arguably its most demanding.

Perched at 1,400 to 1,800 feet above the fog line, with thin volcanic soils, steep slopes of up to 30 degrees, and the longest growing season in the valley, Mt. Veeder produces less than 2% of Napa's total output. The result is wine of uncommon concentration, structure, and complexity — built for collectors who know that the best things take time.

At the helm is Chris Carpenter, one of the most decorated mountain winemakers in Napa Valley history. With a Master's in both viticulture and enology from UC Davis and research experience at Tenute Antinori in Tuscany, Carpenter has spent over two decades crafting 100-point wines for Lokoya and Cardinale. Mt. Brave is where that same obsessive precision meets a wine that's accessible enough for the cellar — and surprising enough to be opened tonight.

The 2021 is Carpenter's best yet. James Suckling called it "dreamy" and questioned whether it might be "the best ever." With 3,830 cases produced and scores stacking up from every major critic, this is a rare chance to own a piece of Mt. Veeder's finest vintage without the Lokoya price tag.

Tasting Notes

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, 1% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot.

Violets and ripe blueberry open the nose, deepening into cassis, plum paste, graphite minerality, and bay leaf.

On the palate, it's full-bodied with velvety tannins — powerful but polished, with mid-palate opulence framed by tobacco, sage, and bouquet garni complexity.

The finish is long and focused, with singed applewood and cast iron accents that are distinctly, unmistakably Veeder. Drink now through 2040.

Aged 23 months in 80% new French oak.

Critical Reviews

A fabulous wine of focus and polish with very fine tannins that caress your palate and give great length to the finish. Medium to full body. The aromas of violets and currants are so beautiful. Dreamy. Best ever? A blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 2% merlot, 1% malbec and 1% petit verdot. A total of 3830 cases produced. Give it three to four years to soften. ~ 99 James Suckling

The 2021 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon is inky in the glass, offering mountain huckleberry and black raspberry notes on the nose alongside graphite and shades of dried herbs. The palate is rich and viscous with incredible underlying tension. Pencil lead, anise, creme de cassis and chocolate cake notes all combine on the palate. A joy to consume now, savor this beauty over the next twenty years to come. ~ 97 Owen Bargreen

~ 96 The Wine Independent

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder includes 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% each Malbec and Petit Verdot. Cassis and blueberries are joined on the nose by hints of dried sage, bay leaf and cedary oak. Like the Cabernet Franc, it's full-bodied and silky, with drying tannins and mouthwatering ripeness on the long finish. Give it a couple of years in the cellar and drink it over the next couple of decades. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is deep and winey, with cassis, plum paste and linzer torte notes leading the way. Structured but succulent, offering singed apple wood, bay and cast iron accents that support the fruit through the long and focused finish. Very Veeder, with a touch of old school. Best from 2025 through 2040. 3,830 cases made. ~ 94 Wine Spectator

What our customers say about us

Mt. Brave

Mount Veeder, Napa Valley

Mt. Brave is a boutique Napa Valley winery founded in 2007 on the rugged slopes of the Mt. Veeder AVA, created as a tribute to the pioneering settlers who first farmed this challenging mountain terrain in the 1800s.

Known for its high-elevation vineyards, steep hillsides, and low-yielding soils, the estate produces intensely structured wines—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon along with Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc—crafted by winemaker Christopher Carpenter to reflect the bold, mineral-driven character of this wild and demanding terroir.
