About The Wine

This story doesn’t start with a wine dynasty. It starts with Betty O’Shaughnessy, a Minneapolis real estate developer who also owned and taught at her own cooking school. In 1990 she moved to Napa Valley and settled in Oakville, on a property that already had vines on it. Most people would have stopped at the comfortable valley floor. Betty went up the mountain.

In the mid-’90s, only a handful of serious producers were working on Howell Mountain, names like Dunn and La Jota. Betty started planting there in 1997. Her vineyard sits at about 1,800 feet, above the fog line that blankets the valley below. Up there the sun is steady, the soils are lean, and the grapes have to work for it. That’s exactly what gives mountain Cabernet its depth and backbone. She didn’t plant only Cabernet. She also put in the full Bordeaux family, including varieties almost nobody in Napa grows anymore: Carménère, Gros Verdot and St. Macaire. In 2000 she added a second mountain, Mount Veeder, on the opposite side of the valley. That site is now home to Betty’s Vineyard, planted entirely to Cabernet.

To make the wines, she brought in Sean Capiaux, who had worked at Jordan, Pine Ridge and Peter Michael. He has made every O’Shaughnessy vintage since the beginning. His approach is old-school with modern precision: native yeasts, minimal intervention, and letting each vineyard speak for itself. O’Shaughnessy is still a small, family-owned winery making around 10,000 cases a year.

For years the winery was known for its allocated single-mountain Cabernets from Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder. Then, starting in 2012, Sean did something no one else could: he blended all three estates together. The result is the only Napa Cabernet made from estate vineyards on Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and Oakville. The fruit comes from the same vines that go into the single-mountain bottlings. Howell Mountain brings structure and ripe red fruit. Mount Veeder adds grip and a savory, mineral edge. Oakville rounds it all out with silky texture and pure fruit. It’s O’Shaughnessy’s whole story in one glass.

The 2021 shows exactly why this bottling has become a critics’ favorite: 95 points from The Wine Palate, and 94 from both Jeb Dunnuck and Decanter. Black cherry and cassis lead, followed by graphite, savory herbs, baking spice and a hint of floral lift. The texture is polished and the tannins are ripe and velvety. It’s powerful, yet it never feels heavy, and it finishes long and focused. It’s open and generous now, especially after 30 minutes in a decanter, and it will keep evolving through about 2040. Pour it with a grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb chops, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Gouda on a Wednesday night just because.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

~95 The Wine Palate

A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% St. Macaire, and small amounts of other varieties, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is rocking stuff. Cassis, graphite, spicy oak, and savory herbs all emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort, which shows freshness, vibrancy, and purity, with sweet yet present tannins and a nicely focused, elegant mouthfeel. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

This unique blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% St. Macaire, 1% Merlot, 1% Gros Verdot, 1% Carmenere, and 1% Cabernet Franc is culled together from three Estate vineyards in the Howell Mountain, Mt. Veeder and Oakville AVAs. A riveting, full-bodied red teeming with ripe and satiny textures, opulent red, black, and blue-toned fruits, with graceful, velvety tannins and a host of complex aromas and flavours that begin with black cherry, spiced plum, toasted fennel, maple and toffee, and end with cassis, graphite, mulberry, and espresso beans. A real pleasure palace. ~94 Decanter

Powerful but polished, this full-bodied wine boasts generous dark fruit flavors, attractive oak spices and a good, moderately tannic texture. Nicely concentrated black cherry, dried plum, cedar and star anise nuances. ~93 James Suckling

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is bright, precise and vibrant, with red/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, rose petal and blood orange. Medium in body and supremely polished, the 2021 is a super-elegant wine that also shows the more nuanced style favored here today. The 2021 is a blend of fruit from the Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain and Oakville estate properties. ~93 Vinous Media

O'Shaughnessy's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon—the regular Napa Valley bottling, blended from vineyards in Oakville and on Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder—nails the varietal-regional character, easily combining ripe black cherries and cassis with streaks of vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied, with a long, mouthwatering finish and softly dusty tannins. Easy to enjoy now and over the next decade, it's the sort of reasonably priced, high-quality effort true wine lovers should be rushing out to find. ~93 Wine Advocate
