About the Wine
Thurlow Cellars is a modern-day tribute to Napa Valley's elite winemaking tradition. Born in the high-elevation vineyards of Howell Mountain, Diamond Mountain, and Atlas Peak, this blend captures the essence of Napa Valley’s prized terroir. Since 2016, Thurlow Cellars has been steadfast in its pursuit of excellence, operating with a deep respect for the land and a commitment to sustainable practices.
Winemaker Kevin Morrissey brings a unique vision to Thurlow Cellars. Kevin’s journey to Thurlow Cellars is as unique as the wine he creates. A former NYU film student turned Napa Valley winemaker, Morrissey’s career began with an unlikely pivot from Hollywood to the legendary vineyards of Bordeaux, where he interned at Château Pétrus. That experience sparked a passion for winemaking that’s led him to Napa, where he honed his skills with celebrated vintners like Tony Soter at Stags’ Leap and Etude.
Under the skilled eye of winemaker Kevin Morrissey, each vineyard block is treated with precision. From cold soaking to gentle fermentation in small stainless steel tanks, every detail is attended to with care. Thurlow Cellars’ commitment to quality shines through in its minimal intervention methods—wines are bottled un-fined and unfiltered, allowing the true character of the grapes to speak.
A total of only ten barrels were crafted this year, relying exclusively on two renowned coopers, Taransaud and St. Martin, to add subtle layers of complexity. Yields are intentionally kept low at just 1.8 tons per acre, capturing the intensity and character of each grape.
2021 is looking to be one of the vintages of the decade. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-98 point score, and said: "Two thousand twenty-one is a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that production is down sharply, 30-50% in many cases. The wines have tremendous energy as well as finesse. In tasting, the 2021s show some of the savory intensity of other drought vintages – 2013 and 2014 come to mind – but with more aromatic explosiveness and greater inner sweetness."
Tasting Notes
74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah, 6% Merlot. This is a full-bodied powerhouse of flavor, in classic style. Rich, ripe fruit, focused tannins, exotic spice with significant drive. A spin in the decanter allows it to open up, but the real magic will happen in 3-5 years.
