About The Wine

Vine Hill Ranch has supplied fruit for some of Napa's most legendary Cabernets for half a century — including Beaulieu Vineyards' storied Georges de Latour Private Reserve. The Phillips family, who've owned this 600-acre Oakville estate since the 1950s, finally debuted their own label in 2008. The result: a wine that shows what southwestern Oakville can do when three generations of vineyard mastery meet Old World precision.

This is a co-ferment from blocks 4 and 7 — the gravelly parcels that yield the vineyard's most concentrated, structured fruit. Winemaker Francoise Peschon fermented it for 27 days on the skins, then aged it twenty months in 80% new French oak (Taransaud and Sylvain). Bottled without fining or filtration to preserve every ounce of texture and development potential.

The 2021 vintage captures the cooler, more restrained side of Oakville — a wine built on balance rather than power. Almost equal parts red, blue, and black fruit. Rounded texture, silky tannins, a finish that won't quit. Violets and blueberries up front, then graphite, wet earth, black mushrooms. Full-bodied but precise, more Bordeaux than Napa in its architecture.

99 points from Owen Bargreen. 98 from James Suckling. The kind of scores that prove the vineyard's reputation wasn't hype — and the kind of wine that belongs in a serious cellar for the next two decades.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard is very young, but also remarkably elegant. There's terrific energy driving the 2021. Red/purplish fruit, crushed rocks, lavender, mint and sage lend magnificent vibrancy throughout. Even with the low yields, the 2021 is rich and concentrated, but not heavy. A closing floral accent perks up the finish...The 2021 ‘Vine Hill Ranch’ by TOR comes from this famed spot in the Oakville AVA, as this site neighbors the wooded hills of the Mayacama Mountain Range. This bottling comes from blocks 4, 7, and 3 and was stored in 80% new French oak prior to bottling. Exotic spices mark the nose alongside creme de violette, mocha, tar and black licorice. The palate is seamless and beautifully concentrated, with its stony soil character, as every working piece moves in seamless unison. A total stunner from this enticing vintage, savor this beauty now and over the next twenty five years — or potentially more. ~99 Owen Bargreen

Extremely aromatic with violets, blue berries and black currants. Then notes of graphite and lead pencil come through. Amazing aromas. Full-bodied with rich and dusty tannins that show fantastic length and intensity. Bark and wet earth undertones with black mushrooms. Needs three or four years to come around. Best after 2026. ~98 James Suckling

From an incredible vineyard in the southern part of Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard is about as silky and seamless as they come, with full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, savory herbs, chocolate, and spicy wood. Coming from Blocks 3, 4, and 7, it has polished tannins, flawless overall balance, and a layered. ~97 Jeb Dunnuck

A blend from three blocks of this famed vineyard at the southern end of Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch combines scents of pencil shavings, subtle hints of thyme and sage, black cherries and mint. Medium to full-bodied, it doesn't have the sheer power of some of the other Tor bottlings but makes up for it in complexity. Silky, streamlined on the palate and boasting tremendous length on the finish, it's another winner from Tor Kenward and winemaker Jeff Ames. ~97 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Tor Wines

Vine Hill Ranch has a long grape-growing past starting in the 19th century. Bruce Phillips' family has owned the property since his grandfather acquired 2,500 acres in the 1950s. Early on, Vine Hill Ranch grapes went into famous Napa cabernet blend Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de la Tour Private Reserve. In 2008 the Phillips family debuted their own version, VHR. The property is now 600 acres with 70 planted to vines, located in southwestern Oakville. Vine Hill Ranch has been the source of many of Napa's greatest Cabernets for the past 50 years. The Phillips family has represented the best of the Napa Valley grape growing community for three generations. Bob and Alex Phillips moved to their family's Oakville vineyard in 1978. Tor has a 50-year history in the Napa Valley. Grapes have been grown at Vine Hill Ranch for around 150 years.
