About The Wine

Fort Ross-Seaview is the far edge of the Sonoma Coast — a place where the Pacific is close enough that the vines feel it all season. The fog arrives early and lifts late. Temperatures stay cool. For Pinot Noir, this geography produces something structurally different from Russian River and its neighbors: tighter, more tensile, with the kind of grip that tells you the bottle will get better in the rack.

This comes from Block 14 at Fort Ross Vineyard — a meticulously managed estate that sits at 1,200 to 1,700 feet above sea level, overlooking the Pacific less than a mile away. Winemaker Matt Sands (who refined his craft at Screaming Eagle in St. Helena) made it 100% Pinot Noir and aged it 12 months in 50% new French oak. It's a small-lot, single-vineyard wine made for the kind of buyer who understands why the address matters.

James Suckling awarded it 95 points, citing its complexity, balance, personality, and ability to age and improve. The 2021 vintage on the Northern California coast delivered exceptional balance between fruit and structure. This is a Pinot that rewards patience — open it from 2025, and it will give you something at 2030 that it can't today.

100% Pinot Noir from Fort Ross Vineyard, Block 14, Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, Sonoma Coast. The nose is bright and layered: red cherry, red damson plum, coastal conifer, and a saline, mineral quality that signals the vineyard's proximity to the Pacific. Add allspice, light herb, and a delicate floral lift. On the palate it's structured and lively — black raspberry, sweet black plum, tea, and bergamot, with real drive and persistence. The finish has a crisp, pleasantly grippy exit with lingering cherry and wet stone. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity give this genuine tensile structure.

Aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. Drink from 2025, cellar through 2030+.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Handsomely structured, with fine-grained tannins, a full body and vibrant acidity behind impressive black cherry, blackcurrant, savory cedar and wet stone flavors. Offers complexity, balance, personality and an ability to age and improve. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Pouring a jewel-like ruby color, the 2021 Pinot Noir Fort Ross Vineyard is pretty and inviting on the nose with aromas of candied roses, fresh red cherries, wild strawberries, rocky earth, and fresh herbs. I like the clarity of this wine a lot, and it has a more linear feel, offering fine tannins and a clean, fresh acidity. It floats off the palate and closes with notes of orange peel. It’s a very elegant wine to enjoy over the coming 12 or 15 years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

From Fort Ross Vineyard, sitting between 365 and 518 metres, 1.6 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean in Sonoma County. Winemaker Matt Sands, who produces lovely, rich, structured Napa Cabernet Sauvignons for several labels under the New Frontier Wine Co portfolio, is wading into new territory with Pinot-making. His initial foray reveals a heavier hand. In time, there is no question that he’ll find a lighter touch, as evidenced by this Fort Ross Pinot, which was my favourite in his lineup of 2021 Pinot Noirs. It balances power and richness with intense salinity and is braced by a firm backbone of acidity. Wild herbs laced with ocean spray and cedarwood notes mingle with black cherry and blackberry. Angular, pointed tannins have a firm grip on the palate, and the finish is marked by savoury smoked cedar and bacon fat. Pinot Noir clone 777 was aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. ~94 Decanter
