About The Wine

The Zuccardi story began in 1963 when Alberto 'Tito' Zuccardi, a civil engineer, planted the family's first vineyard in Mendoza to demonstrate an innovative irrigation system. His son Jose Alberto took the reins in 1985 and helped propel Argentine Malbec onto the global stage.

Today, third-generation Sebastian Zuccardi leads with a focus on terroir research and precision viticulture — founding an R&D department in 2009 dedicated to studying the soils of the Uco Valley.

This wine bears the name of Jose Zuccardi, honoring the winemaker's father and the generation that brought Argentine wine to the world. It's a mountain Malbec from high-altitude Uco Valley vineyards with calcareous deposits — the kind of site that delivers structure and freshness without sacrificing power. The family has been named World's Best Vineyard multiple times and inducted into the Hall of Fame; Wine Enthusiast crowned them New World Winery of the Year.

The blend is 95% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeasts in concrete tanks and aged in large oak foudres. The wine is bottled unfiltered — a choice that preserves texture and the mineral imprint of the site. Wine Spectator scored it 94 points.

In the glass: intense red-black color, complex nose of ripe black and red fruit with subtle spice, firm mature tannins, and the bright acidity that defines high-altitude fruit. The finish is long, seamless, and elegantly structured. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it — the bones are there for the long haul.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A full-bodied and expressive malbec with 5% cabernet sauvignon. Minerals, black cherries and cool blue fruit. A touch of cocoa powder, but there is nothing plush. Concentrated but austere, with tons of juicy fruit and dusty tannins treading into a long, bright finish. Fermented in concrete and aged 24 months in foudres. Drink or hold.~96 James Suckling

Dark ruby, opaque, purple reflections, brightening on the edge. Sweet cherries, a hint of plums, inviting touch of nougat, a touch of cassis, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fine fruit expression, fresh and animating, hides its muscles, salty minerality, lingers long, good ageing potential, rather classic style. ~ 94 Falstaff

Sourced from Altamira and Gualtallary, the 2021 José Zuccardi is 95% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that was fermented in concrete before maturing two years in foudre. It is an homage to Sebastián's father, aiming to evoke the historic wines of Argentina—as Sebastián says, "not the 1990s or 2000s, but the 1940s or 1950s." It leads with an inviting, focused nose of black fruits and balsamic accents, introducing a creamy, svelte and taut palate. It concludes with a seamless, refined and elegantly decadent finish. It is a perfect marriage of classically informed richness and contemporary precision.~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

~94 Tim Atkin

The 2021 Malbec Jose Zuccardi contains a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. It aged for 24 months in 2,500-liter French oak foudres. This is subtle and composed, with aromas of violet, lavender and field herbs framed by cedar. The style has evolved toward finesse and juicy texture, with chalky tension and fine grain. Remarkably, this has carved out its own identity. ~93 Vinous Media

Smooth in texture, yet there’s a pleasant vibrancy lifting the flavors, with a loam and herb base to the compact core of floral, plum and cherry notes, all rounded out by spice and espresso details on the structured finish. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. ~ 92 Wine Spectator
