About the Wine
Château Pavie, one of the most esteemed estates in Saint-Émilion, has a legacy that stretches back to Roman times. Its name comes from the ancient Pavie fishery, and the estate has evolved over centuries, with its current form shaped by the vision of Gérard Perse, who took ownership in 1998. Perse's modern approach to winemaking transformed the estate, bringing international recognition and earning it Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in 2012.
Located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, Château Pavie’s vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure and well-draining soils, ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s meticulous care for its vines is reflected in the wines it produces, with a focus on quality and precision.
In 2005, Pavie launched Arômes de Pavie as its second wine, crafted from younger vines and selected barrels that didn’t make it into the grand vin. Despite being a second wine, Arômes de Pavie receives the same level of attention and care as the flagship wine. The result is a wine that showcases the elegance and depth of the Château’s style at a more approachable price.
Tasting Notes
50% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon. A rich and full-bodied red with a deep, intense color. The wine presents a harmonious blend of ripe black fruit, elegant spice, and subtle oak. Smooth tannins and a long, silky finish make it a pleasure to drink now, but it will continue to develop beautifully with a few years of aging.
Critic Review
The second wine of this terrific château is the 2022 Aromes De Pavie, an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (the same blend as the 2020). It might be the greatest second wine in the vintage, displaying a classic Pavie style in its ripe red and black fruits as well as notes of camphor, chocolate, violets, and graphite. Rich and powerful, with medium to full-bodied richness, it's going to be ideal for drinking on release and over the following 15-20 years. ~96 JD
A juicy and rich wine with medium chewy tannins and a medium body. Racy. Plenty of crunchy fruit and energy. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc. ~94 JS
