About The Wine

Sangiovese isn't the lead grape in this bottle. Canaiolo is. Then Mammolo, Alicante, Ciliegiolo — four Tuscan varieties most of the region ripped out fifty years ago. This is what Tuscany tasted like before Cabernet showed up.

Avignonesi has been the name in Montepulciano since 1974. Virginie Saverys bought it in 2009 and did what most new owners won't — she tore up the playbook. Certified organic. Certified biodynamic. Nine vineyards farmed like the soil is the product, because here it is.

Da-Di is where that thinking gets loud. The name is Chinese for "earth," and it's literal: no steel, no oak. The wine ferments and ages six months in thirteen terracotta amphorae, every one of them made in Tuscany. Eight came from Artenova in Impruneta, five from Laboratorio San Rocco using clay off Mount Amiata. Punchdowns by hand.

28% Canaiolo, 27% Sangiovese, 23% Mammolo, 16% Alicante, 6% Ciliegiolo. Fermented and aged six months in Tuscan terracotta. Sweet spice leads — cinnamon and star anise — followed by raspberry and red currant, with violet lift. Silky, welcoming entry. Medium density with chalky mineral tannin. Sour cherry and black cherry, floral inflection through the middle. Fresh and lightly fruit-sweet, with bright tangy acidity that keeps the palate watering.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

White pepper, red cherries, berries and some potpourri and seashells. Slim and linear on the palate with a light to medium body rounded by firm, fresh tannins. Peppery, berry-oriented finish. Cheerful and brambly. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2024. ~90 James Suckling
