About The Wine

There's a saying among Barolo obsessives that Serralunga d'Alba is "more Barolo than Barolo itself." It's the village that produces Monfortino — the Giacomo Conterno bottling widely considered the single greatest wine in Italy — along with Bruno Giacosa's legendary red-label Barolos and the impossibly allocated wines of Cappellano. This bottle carries the name of that same village, and it comes from a family that's called it home since the 1950s.

The Boasso family's story is a working farmer's story, not a marketing story. Giuseppe came back from World War II to a traditional Piedmontese farm — vines, hazelnuts, animals, everything the family needed to get by. His son Franco expanded the holdings through the 1970s and 80s, and the family began estate-bottling their own wine for the first time in the mid-1980s, after decades of simply selling their grapes to other producers. Today Franco runs the estate with his sons Ezio, who handles the vines and cellar, and Claudio, who runs tastings — a genuinely small operation making roughly 40,000 bottles a year across the whole range, using long macerations and big old Slavonian oak casks the traditional way.

This particular wine draws from several of the family's plots scattered across Serralunga rather than a single named cru — a true expression of the commune itself, sitting on the region's distinctive Lequio Formation soils, layers of gray marl and yellow sand laid down roughly 12 million years ago. It's exactly the kind of high-limestone geology that gives Serralunga's Nebbiolo its signature: powerful, structured, herb-scented wines that improve for decades in the right cellar.

Think of this bottle as the clearest, most honest introduction to what makes Serralunga the village every serious Barolo drinker eventually gravitates toward — made by a family who has never needed to chase trends because their terroir was already doing the heavy lifting.

100% Nebbiolo. This wine leads with deep, intense garnet color and a nose built on wild berries, ripe cherry, and plum, layered with dried rose, licorice, tobacco, and a crack of black pepper. On the palate the tannins are robust but well-integrated, backed by balanced acidity and real length, finishing on notes of dark chocolate and truffle that keep unfolding in the glass. This is serious, structured Barolo built for the table — red meat, game, and aged cheeses are the natural pairing, ideally after giving the bottle time to breathe.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Tar and smoke with subtle cherries and a dried-flower undertone. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, with assertive, vibrant fruit and integrated tannins. Open and accessible with some aeration. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Boasso

Franco Boasso has quietly become one of Serralunga d'Alba's most reliable producers — traditional pricing, no hype, just serious Barolo from some of the commune's best-regarded vineyards. The family farms plots in Gabutti, Margheria, and Lazzarito, among others, and keeps the operation small and focused.
