About The Wine

Willi Bründlmayer has spent decades proving that Riesling belongs on the same shelf as the great whites of the world — and Heiligenstein is where he stakes that claim. The vineyard sits on Permian desert sandstone laid down some 270 million years ago, a rare geological anomaly in the heart of the Kamptal, and the Bründlmayer family farms 12 hectares right in the center of it.

The estate itself has been in family hands since the 16th century, based out of the small town of Langenlois. It's the kind of place where the wine list — Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, sparkling — hasn't changed much in generations, because there was never a reason to chase trends when you're already sitting on one of Austria's best vineyard sites. Willi has run it with the same instinct: protect the land, farm it with care, and let the site do most of the talking.

The 2022 vintage marks a genuine turning point for this wine: for the first time, fruit from the site's Lyra- and Guyot-trained vines was harvested and fermented together, folding two distinct training styles into one bottling. The result is a Riesling that trades on tension rather than weight — bone-dry, saline, and built to unwind slowly over years in the cellar rather than show everything on day one. This is the wine Bründlmayer's reputation is built on, and the 2022 is one of the more compelling editions of it yet.

100% Riesling from the Zöbinger Heiligenstein cru. The nose opens with cypress and a touch of smoke, giving way to green citrus peel and a deeper, roasted-mocha complexity that builds with air. On the palate, juicy white peach and candied citrus fruit meet tingling acidity and fine, almost tannic grip, with dried flower character running underneath. Stony, saline minerality frames the finish — subtle for now, but built to unfold with time in the bottle. Bone-dry throughout.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Riesling Heiligenstein is from core parcels of the site, where cool Waldviertel air meets the warm Pannonian influence. This 2022 vintage is the first where the Lyra- and Guyot-trained vines were co-harvested and co-fermented. The nose has a subtle note of cypress, with a touch of smokiness and a suspicion of green citrus peel. The palate adds a riper notion of juicy white peach, but remains framed with tingling citrus. Both elements together result in immense juiciness, showing a svelte exuberance that, for now, skips over stony minerality, which will take time to reveal itself. This is beautiful, taut, long and serene. (Bone-dry). ~96 Vinous

The 2022 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1–TW shows notes of ripe Riesling seeds reminiscent of mocha on the dense, delicately creamy and spicy, remarkably complex and stony bouquet. Green but juicy on the palate, again with notes of roasted mocha beans, this Heiligenstein is very fine, elegant, uniquely purist in style, pleasantly firm and intensely saline, even if it was still little approachable in the fall. It pulls together well on the finish. This is very promising. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. ~94 Wine Advocate

From a site that is usually all about sleek elegance, this is remarkably substantial and richly textural on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Wonderful fine tannins, candied citrus fruit and complex dried flower character. Lovely fresh acidity for the hot and dry vintage at the long, delicately spicy finish. ~94 James Suckling

Good food wine with certain ageing potential, versatile. ~94 Falstaff
