About the Wine
They say, “home is where the heart is”. That’s how the Marquis de Ségur felt about Calon Ségur. He was considered one of the greatest winemakers in all of Europe in the 18th century. At that time, he was making wine at numerous Châteaux, including the Lafite and Latour. He lived at Calon and is now remembered for making the statement:
“I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.”
These words have forever marked the history of the property. In the following century, the heart was engraved in the stonework of the château. And, later, the heart made its way onto the wine label.
Château Calon de Segur is a legend. Since 1855, it has been recognized as one of the fourteen third great growths in Bordeaux. Calon-Segur is located in the northern part of Saint-Estephe, very close to the Gironde river and about five miles due north of Ch. Lafite Rothschild. The first records of Château Calon Segur date back to Gallo-Roman times. In fact, it is believed that this was one of the oldest Châteaux in all of Saint-Estèphe. After many years and a variety of owners, it finally became the property of the Marques de Segur, who also owned Château Lafite, Latour, and Mouton. The estate's logo comes from the famous phrase of the Marquess: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon."
In 1894, Georges Gasqueton and his uncle Charles Hanappier bought the estate. They ran the property until 2012 and were responsible for some of the most legendary vintages to date: 1920, 1940, and 1950.
Madame Denise Gasqueton, along with her daughter Hélène, became the owner and leader after the death of her husband Philippe Gasqueton. They were the first to bring modernity to the estate and they renovated the winery and the vineyards.
In 2012 the property was acquired by the French insurance company Suravenir. Since this change of owners, the property begun a serious modernization process, especially in the wine and barrel cellar. Recently, in September 2020, the owners of Château Calon Segur (Suravenir Group) acquired Château Vray Croix de Gay, Pomerol, Château Siaurac, in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation, and Château Le Prieure in St. Emilion from the owners of Latour.
Calon de Segur is a 136-acre estate with typical Bordeaux varieties planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vines are 25 years old on average, but they have some old vines between 45 and 60 years old. The terroir of Calon Ségur is unique in the Médoc. The soil is made up of a mixture of gravel, rocks, clay, sand, and limestone soils on the surface. Thanks to the combination of gravel and clay, the wines reflect a fine and elegant character with great power.
The wine consultant at Calon de Segur is rockstar Éric Boissenot. Eric consults at 40 of the 1855 Classified estates , including Lafite, Margaux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases, and Ducru Beaucaillou.
Earning the #59 spot in James Suckling’s Top 100 French Wines of 2025, the 2022 Calon Ségur underscores why this historic 3rd Growth remains one of Saint-Estèphe’s most captivating estates—where heritage, power, and elegance converge in every vintage.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux; it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator, who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes

Critical Reviews
~ #59 Top 100 French Wines of 2025 by James Suckling
The 2022 Calon-Ségur is another superb wine from this historic Saint-Estèphe third growth that began a comprehensive renaissance the better part of a decade ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with hints of fresh mint, burning embers, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, supple tannins and a long, saline finish. ~98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The flagship 2022 Château Calon Ségur checks in as 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It's a massive wine from this château that brings a fabulous nose of darker currants, smoked tobacco, chocolaty oak, graphite, and loamy earth. This full-bodied, deep, unctuous Saint-Estèphe has a round, layered mouthfeel, remarkably pure tannins, and flawless overall balance. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck
Inky dark in color, the wine pops with crème de cassis, blackberries, smoke, lead pencil, 5 spice, and flowers in the aromatics. The wine explodes with endless waves of cassis, peppery blackberries, Asian spice, espresso, and dark chocolate on the palate. Everything is in place here. The wine coats your teeth, palate, and gums with fruit, and freshness that sings. The seamless finish is made even better with a refreshing hit of chocolate mint at the end. The wine builds, and expands in the finish as it crosses the 60 second mark. The wine blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 5% Cabernet franc and 1% Petit Verdot. 15% ABV, 3.8 pH. The harvest took place September 6 - September 27. The is the earliest harvest in the history of the property. Yields were 26 hectoliters per hectare. Only 53% of harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. The wine is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels for 20 months before bottling. Drink from 2028-2060. ~98 The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep dark ruby garnet, inky, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening. Ripe black forest berries, blackberry confit, some cassis, nougat, subtle noble wood nuances, a hint of candied purple fruit. Very powerful, ripe cherries, vivid, supporting tannins, mineral and lively structure, dark chocolate on the finish, lingers, will benefit from years of maturity. ~97 Falstaff
Stunning depth and minerality with fine spices, dark olives, ashtray and a hint of white pepper, paprika and iron. Powerful but also really fine, complex and classy, with full body and super-fine-grained tannins. Spot-on balance helps highlight depth and layers. Really long and restrained. Very complete. Already appealing but will improve in the next decade. ~97 James Suckling
Slate and chalk textured tannins, skilful work over ageing to ensure a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. The intensity and concentration are seductive and you can expect plenty of black chocolate, espresso, cocoa bean, liquorice, crème de cassis, seriously enjoyable, clear ageing ability. 100% new oak in the cellars. 28hl/h yield, following hail. Harvest September 6 through to 27. ~96 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
A steady stream of cassis, dark plum and black cherry preserves seamlessly melds with lilac, licorice, alder and chestnut notes. Keeps a sleek, polished edge through the lengthy finish, while a subtle tug of earth provides a nice counterpoint. Captures the essence of the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. ~96 Wine Spectator
