About the Wine
If you’re looking for a Bordeaux that’s bold, refined, and has some serious history, the 2022 Château Canon La Gaffelière is the one to grab. This is more than just a wine; it’s the culmination of decades of passion, innovation, and top-tier terroir from one of Saint-Émilion’s most celebrated estates.
The estate’s story begins in the 19th century, when it was known by two separate names—Canon Boitard and La Gaffeliere-Boitard. Eventually, to make things simpler (and a bit more memorable), the names were combined to create the iconic Château Canon La Gaffelière. Fast forward to 1969, when Count Joseph Hubert von Neipperg purchased the property from the Meyrat family, and today, his family continues to oversee this legendary estate. Stephan von Neipperg, Count Joseph’s son, manages the property and other prestigious Saint-Émilion estates, bringing his passion for organic farming and sustainable viticulture to every bottle.
The 2022 vintage is a killer mix of 45% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Franc, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines that are up to 80 years old. The result? A wine that’s bursting with ripe, juicy flavors of black cherry, plum, and raspberry—so fresh you’ll think you’re biting into the fruit itself. But there’s more: subtle notes of graphite and violet add depth and complexity, making every sip more interesting than the last.
This wine is silky, smooth, and bursting with life. It’s balanced but powerful, with tannins that are rich but refined and acidity that keeps things fresh. It’s a wine that’ll make you look forward to every glass, whether you’re sipping it now or tucking it away to age like a Bordeaux boss.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Tasting Notes

Critical Reviews
The 2022 Canon-La-Gaffelière soars out of the glass with a rush of exotic floral and spice notes. Rose petal, mint, white pepper, chalk, lavender and mocha make a strong first impression. Lithe and elegant, but with plenty of understated power, the 2022 is an absolute jewel of a wine. ~97 Vinous Media
A blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Canon la Gaffelière exhibits aromas of raspberries and plums, complemented by notions of iris, rose petals, incense and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's supple, suave and sophisticated, with a lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep, dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, subtly brighter at the rim. Delicate tobacco, a touch of herbal savouriness, clove, black cherry, candied orange zest. Complex, juicy, fine fruitiness, creamy texture, silky tannins, persists well, balanced and equipped with good freshness. A textured food wine with definite ageing potential. ~96 Falstaff
Aromas of ripe redcurrants and hints of caramel and fresh herbs such as thyme and rosemary. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows fine tannins under lots of ripe and luscious fruit but is not heavy. The finish is juicy and savory. 35% cabernet franc, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 50% merlot. From organically grown grapes. ~96 James Suckling
Ripe perfumed, floral and black fruits on the nose. Intense and concentrated, with tobacco, cherries, violets and crushed stones. Full, chewy and round, plushly textured but keeping a cool and savoury touch to the palate with balancing acidity that keeps the interest and movement. Dynamic and structured, lovely detail and density to this, you have richness but there’s also a vein of sweetness and tension that focuses the wine and gives the definition. Smooth and elegant, not the most vibrant, but the composure and overall character is lovely. Higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than usual in the grand vin. ~95 Decanter
Based on 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils, the 2022 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière is concentrated and fresh, with a slightly inward, unevolved style. Ripe blackberries, black cherries, leafy herbs, scorched earth, and floral notes define the aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, it’s vibrant and focused on the palate, with ripe tannins and a pure, seamless mouthfeel. This exotic, perfumed, lifted, spicy wine will benefit from time in the cellar. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck
Enjoyable brambled fruits, medium intensity ruby colour, smoked earth, cedar and sandalwood, this has a precision and limestone fingerprint. Traces of smoked oak as it opens, this has precision and a limestone fingerprint, with violets, peonies, raspberry leaf. Neipperg family estate, 18ha, certified organic, 47hl/h yield. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
