About The Wine

The estate’s journey spans over a century, beginning in 1894 when Georges Gasqueton acquired the vineyards. With a rich history marked by the Gasqueton family’s stewardship, it wasn’t until 2012, under new ownership, that Chateau Capbern truly began to shine in a modern light.

This is where history meets bold new direction: the estate was bought by Suravenir Insurance, with Jean-Pierre Moueix, the man behind Petrus, taking a minority stake. The changes came fast. In just a few short years, Laurent Dufau was brought on board, transforming the winemaking process and elevating the estate to new heights. By 2014, Chateau Capbern produced a wine that was the best in its history—a moment that marked the beginning of its new, elevated era.

The 2022 vintage is where all of this brilliance comes together. With a dynamic blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine is a reflection of Saint-Estèphe’s unique terroir—gravel, clay, and chalky soils, combined with old vines averaging 20 years in age. The vines are split across two distinct parcels: one near the prestigious Chateau Calon-Ségur, and the other closer to the Gironde River. These diverse soils give the wine its depth, richness, and complexity, making every sip a true expression of the land.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, the 2022 Chateau Capbern is a showstopper. It has all the elegance you’d expect from a top-tier Bordeaux: rich fruit notes of blackcurrant, plum, and a hint of licorice, balanced perfectly with refined tannins and a touch of oak spice. The wine’s smooth, lingering finish will have you reaching for another glass, and its ability to age beautifully means it will only get better with time.

Chateau Capbern is now a modern classic. It’s the perfect wine for anyone who appreciates Bordeaux’s history, but also wants to taste the future of this iconic region. Whether you’re pairing it with a hearty meal or sipping it solo, this wine delivers everything you want from Saint-Estèphe—and then some. Don’t just drink Bordeaux—experience it.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Ashtray and fine dark spices with plenty of cassis and peppercorns. Spiced black cherries too. Rich on the palate with fine, dusty tannins that manage to vibrate and deliver structure to the fruit. Almost full-bodied, this has outstanding depth, concentration and length. Drink from 2027. ~94 James Suckling

Deep ruby colour, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Herbal savouriness and black olives, dark wild berries, a hint of liquorice. Medium complexity, dark cherries, taut tannins, gastronomic, well lasting style. ~93 Falstaff

Spring mint, currants, black cherries, tobacco, and a touch of spice in the nose lead the way to the palate, which, even though the ABV is high, the fruits feel fresh, and lively, with no touch of heat. You find a nice touch of oceanic influence at the end of the finish. The wine blends 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. ~93 The Wine Cellar Insider

Notes of red and black currant preserves form the core, while dried lilac and rose hip add a floral hint. Sleek through the finish, with just a kiss of toast that lets an iron detail chime prettily underneath the fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2037. 6,000 cases made. ~92 James Suckling
