About the Wine
Château Lascombes occupies the most sought-after plots in Margaux and was included in the 1855 Bordeaux classification as a Second Great Growth. 2016 is a can't miss vintage in Bordeaux with many critics drawing comparisons to the exceptional 2010 vintage. 2016 in Margaux received a vintage rating of 97 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Chateau Lascombes is located about 1 mile west of the iconic Chateau Margaux which retails for $900 a bottle.
Director Dominique Befve has led the estate since 2001. Dominique was previously the technical director of Chateaux Lafite Rothschild. Michel Rolland has been a consultant for their winemaking team for the past 20 years.
Michel Rolland grew up at Chateau Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol. After completing his degree in enology at the University of Bordeaux, Michel and his wife Dany began consulting in 1985. He now works with over 80 Chateaux in Bordeaux and has consulted internationally, Bond and Harlan in Napa, and Ornellaia in Italy, making him one of the most sought-after consultants in the world.
Chateau Lascombes has the largest vineyard in the Margaux appellation with 120 hectares under vine, with an average vine age of 35 years. The high proportion of Merlot ensures softer tannins and allows Lascombes to be more approachable within the 8- to 10-year mark compared to many other Médoc classified wines.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux; it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator, who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Tasting Notes
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
The nose is open and very expressive. As you turn the glass, the richness of the wine is revealed with ripe black fruit appearing in the foreground. Discreet oak notes flow through harmoniously in an explosion of fruit aromas. The entry into the mouth is tasty, followed by an invasion of fruit on the palate. The wine is at the same time precise, concentrated, opulent, and lively. The tannins are soft and silky. The oak mingles discreetly in a beautiful, fleshy mouth, while the finish is extremely long.
Critical Reviews
Precise, brilliant and engaging, a three-dimensional wine that shows itself in all its splendor. Notes of black cherries, mixed plums, mixed flowers and bergamot describe the secondary scene. Lemon peel and ginger the secondary one. Full body, perfectly extracted tannins and a vertical finish of infinite presence. Better from 2029. ~97 WinesCritic.com
An Earth Mother, with velvet-lined blackberry, Bay leaf, graphite, and roasted coffee bean. Chalky tannins grip the teeth, with a dusty grip. From its backbone and vibrant acidity to its notes of dried violets on the finish, we bow to its elegant nature. ~97 The Tasting Panel
Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Lascombes pulls from 40% of the total production and was aged 18 months mostly in barrels (60% new) with a small portion in foudre. This inky hued beauty boasts a rich, concentrated, full-bodied, well-oaked style as well as pure cassis and darker berry fruits, some graphite, scorched earth, and licorice nuances, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. There is significantly less Merlot and more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than in previous vintages. A powerful wine with aromatic and intense blackcurrant notes, sappy, corpulent, and creamy berries on the palate, full- bodied yet graceful, with splendid complexity, a delicate mid-palate, and a vibrant, long aftertaste. Great effort. ~95 Great Wines from Bordeaux
This is a full-bodied Bordeaux with lots of velvety tannins and intensity. It’s a bit old-school now with so much fruit and texture, but it’s impressive, to say the least. Plenty of blackcurrant and blueberry character. Shows the richness of the vintage. Best after 2030 ~94 James Suckling
Perfumed and aromatic on the nose. Rich and concentrated on the palate, juicy but also there's a richness and power that focuses the black cherry and blackcurrant fruit and acidity and makes it quite serious. Tannins are grippy giving plenty of texture and structure, but this lacks a little energy and finesse. It's certainly stylish though with liquorice, dark chocolate, wet stone and tobacco notes. Tasted twice. The estate has new owners as of November 2022 with the acquisition by Lawrence Wine Estates, (also owners of Napa wineries: Heitz Cellar, Burgess Cellars and Stony Hill). The group was established by the Lawrence family, led by US entrepreneur Gaylon Lawrence, alongside managing partner and Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr MS. 2022 is the last vintage by winemaker Dominique Befve with ex-Ornellaia winemaker Axel Heinz taking over as of the 2023 vintage. ~93 Decanter
