About the Wine
Château Léoville Barton dates back almost 200 years of Bordeaux history. Classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this legendary estate resides in the prestigious terroir of Saint Julien, nestled within the enchanting Médoc region.
After the French Revolution, Hugh Barton, an Irish merchant of Bordeaux wines, fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Bordeaux owner. In 1821, he acquired the vineyards of the "Langoa" estate, renaming it "Château Langoa Barton." Drawn to the captivating architecture, elegant façade, and harmonious proportions, Hugh Barton fell in love with the building long before the famous 1855 classification.
In 1826, Hugh Barton seized the opportunity to purchase a quarter of the former Léoville estate. The domain had faced its collapse due to the French Revolution and a complex inheritance settlement. In acquiring what would later become Léoville Barton, Hugh acquired only the vineyards, as he already possessed the necessary winemaking facilities at Langoa. The Barton family takes immense pride in being the longest-standing winemaking family in Bordeaux, alongside Mouton-Rothschild.
Within the 124 acres of vineyards of Château Léoville Barton, old vines thrive in gravelly soils with clay subsoil, ensuring exceptional quality. The vineyard is planted with 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.
James Suckling placed it at #32 on his Top 100 French Wines of 2025, and for good reason—it’s the kind of Bordeaux that defines a generation.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux; it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes
83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.5% Merlot and 5.5% Cabernet Franc.

Cassis, graphite, smoky tobacco, violets, and a wonderful sense of minerality all emerge from the 2022 Château Léoville Barton, a riveting Saint-Julien that shows the style of this estate while bringing the richness and depth of the vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has enough tannins to warrant a decade of cellaring and will have 30+ years of prime drinking. I’d put this up with the finest Léoville Barton I’ve tasted, as well as with the truly greats of the vintage. ~98+ Jeb Dunnuck
Inky purple-black. A fully stacked nose of iris petals, violets and blue-black fruit. Massive but not forced. This shimmers in the glass. Really fine. So harmonious it’s like a perfectly tuned acoustic guitar – it sings, both in the nose and the mouth (in my memory, typing this later, I hear it!). Nothing out of place. Really exciting to think about what this will become. (JH). Tasted en primeur so score is provisional. ~98 Tom Cannavan
Deep garnet-purple colored, after a swirl or two, notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and licorice erupt from the glass, leading to hints of lilac, eucalyptus, crushed rocks, and sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with concentrated black and blue fruit layers, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and incredible tension, finishing with epic length and a beguiling perfume of purple flowers and exotic spices. Magnificent. ~98 The Wine Palate
Shows restraint in this opulent year. Quite complete and refined, and you immediately pick up a bit of sweetness from the fruit of this vintage, but it is not over the top. A lot of finesse and length, with structured, dusty tannins. A no-brainer buy from the vintage. 60% new oak. 83% cabernet sauvignon, 11.5% merlot and 5.5% cabernet franc. Drink from 2027. ~98 James Suckling
Retains signature character and architecture, combined with a come-hither ripeness that is all about the 2022 vintage. A brilliant wine, luscious and supple with cassis and bilberry, damson and black cherry along with cocoa bean and mandarin. Delivers confidence and ageability. The Barton family continue to make this wine unmissable. ~98 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The 2022 Léoville Barton is performing brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, pen ink, cigar box and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and velvety, it's dense and concentrated, with terrific energy and persistence. As readers will remember, it's the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot harvesting and vinification, along with a number of other technical improvements that translate into enhanced purity and precision. ~97+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Delicate chocolate, underlay of dark wild berries, ripe plums, blackberries and liquorice. Complex, cool, mineral body, integrated firm tannins, cherries on the finish, lingers very long with a salty echo. Shows certain ageing potential; a great future. ~97 Falstaff
Violet and iris notes hint at its purity, while the cold cast iron– and charcoal-accented structure warns that patience is required. In between is a core that offers sleek refinement, with shimmering cassis, plum and black cherry puree. Tightly drawn through the pinpoint finish, but everything is in proportion. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2030 through 2050. 10,800 cases made. ~97 Wine Spectator
This is a beautifully textured wine, with its fruit and tannins in harmony. Its intensity is matched by its balance, giving a ripe, layered and elegant wine with a fine future. ~97 Wine Enthusiast
The 2022 Léoville Barton, the second vintage made in the new winery, was the first to be completely gravity-fed instead of using pumps. It has a magnificent bouquet that fulfills my admittedly lofty expectations given its showing from barrel, blessed with an almost pixelated quality that previous vintages perhaps lacked. The nose is very precise with pure black fruit and fine minéralité. Elegant and poised, the medium-bodied palate features finely chiseled tannins and just the right amount of bitterness on the finish. Very persistent—a Saint-Julien you just don’t want to finish. This ranks among the finest in the appellation. ~97 Vinous Media
Chewy, lively, bright, clean, intense, sleek, sharp and straight - this has it all. Excellent definition and poise, refined but still full of life and flavour. Appealing shots of milk chocolate, blackcurrant, black cherry and fragranced flowers. Not so dense or layered or plush, more lean, and straightforward but lovely detail and precision to the tannins balancing the density of fruit and energy of the lively acidity. Fun, serious, fruity, mineral - lots going on here. Simply gorgeous! I love it. Harvest 8-23 September. ~96 Decanter
