About The Wine

With an illustrious history dating to the 17th Century, Pichon Baron has a story to tell. At one time, it was a part of the owner's daughter dowry. More recently, it is owned and operated by AXA Millésimes insurance Group!

Chateau Pichon Baron, located in Pauillac neighbors Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Latour, all of which sell for 2-10x as much.

This Chateau dates back to the 17th century, when a famous wine merchant of the time: Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan bought the plots to create Enclos Rauza. Afterwards it became his daughter's dowry in her marriage to Jacques Pichon de Longueville and began what is known today as Pichon Baron. The story doesn’t end here. In 1851, construction of the iconic castle began. Later in 1855, the Chateau's wine was classified as Second Grand Cru Classé.

Even though the Chateau belonged to the same Pichon de Longueville family for many years, in 1933 it became the property of the Bouteiller family. Today, Chateau Baron belongs to the insurance group: AXA Millésimes and it was from here that the winery began its reconstruction and modernization in 1988.

Like almost all of Pauillac, the terroir from Chateau Baron is a dream site overlooking the Gironde river! The soils of the 180-acre estate are composed of quaternary gravel deposits, large pebbles and sand and an excellent maritime climate. No wonder why Pauillac has its great reputation!

With Christian Seely as the director since 2001 and Jean Rene Matignon as the winemaker, the winery continues to grow both in terms of wine and tourism, becoming one of the most prestigious Chateaux in the Médoc area, and a must-visit place! If you're in the area, this is truly a gem that you can’t miss!

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the second wine from the estate.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A firmly structured wine with solid tannins from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is concentrated and full of black coffee aromas, black currant fruit flavors and a juicy aftertaste. Drink from 2028 ~94 Wine Enthusiast

A plush but refined nose with sweet blackberries and cherries. Ripe and flavorful, this has restrained berries and fine tannins throughout. Long, firm and posh. 50% merlot, 66% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot. Drink from 2027. ~94 James Suckling

Also brilliant, the 2022 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron brings a touch more structure and density than the Tourelles. Cassis, graphite, leather, and cedar pencil notes, as well as a beautiful violet note, define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, pure, precise mouthfeel, and a great finish. It’s another impeccably made, pure, flawlessly balanced wine from this chateau that I’d be happy to drink any time over the coming 15+ years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron was very impressive from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a kind of unassuming bouquet that unfolds in the glass. This is very nuanced, with hints of black truffle filtering through the black fruit and a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and beautifully balanced with a fresh, slightly citric finish. I like the energy in this Les Griffons and it should age well in bottle. ~94 Vinous Media

A touch of opulence to the nose in the aromatically expressive floral and dark fruit scents. Alive and open, this starts with a burst of acidity and pure strawberry flavour but the texture is the most appealing with density and richness - almost plush - but the motion keeps it from being too heavy. Lovely structure, feels well constructed and built with muscles and power underneath the lively fruit. Still more compact than Les Tourelles which would be great to enjoy now, this needs a little longer but will be worth the wait. ~94 Decanter

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections. Hints of cloves and cassis, fine dark wild berryish fruit, tangerine zest. Good complexity, ripe cherries, fine acidity, integrated tannins, mineral, good fruit in the finish. Shows length, a multi-faceted food wine. ~94 Falstaff

Medium to full intensity ruby red, intense and concentrated, this is muscular and fully charged, good slate texture, with smoked caramel and mocha showing the fingerprint of the vintage. 40% new oak, Pierre Montégut director. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

A solid version, with a packed core of blackberry, black currant and black cherry reduction notes wrapped in licorice root, bay leaf and violet. A growl of cast iron emerges through the finish, giving this a burly, earth-driven feel. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2036. 5,568 cases made. ~92 Wine Spectator

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is more Cabernet-driven, echoing the style of the grand vin, as opposed to the more supple, forward Tourelles. Offering up aromas of sweet dark berries and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, built around powdery structuring tannins. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
