About the Wine
Pomerol needs no introduction. This majestic wine region, located on the right bank of Bordeaux, holds some of the most formidable (and expensive) wines in the entire world, including Château Petrus, a wine that will easily sell for over $5k a bottle.
But here's the insider secret that'll blow your mind: Just 800 meters - that's literally a 10-minute casual walk - from the gates of the legendary Château Petrus sits Chateau Maillet, Pomerol's best-kept secret. This isn't just proximity; this is TERROIR GOLD. We're talking about the exact same miraculous clay and gravel soils that make Petrus the stuff of legends, the same microclimate, the same geological magic that creates wines worth more than most wines in the world.
Think about this for a second: You can literally walk from Petrus to Maillet in less time than it takes to properly swirl a glass of wine. The vines are practically neighbors, sharing the same precious earth that produces some of the most coveted liquid on planet Earth.
This is your chance to own a piece of Petrus terroir without the Petrus price tag. When you taste Chateau Maillet, you're experiencing the same soil composition, the same elevation, the same blessed terroir that commands $5,000+ per bottle just a few hundred yards away.
Chateau Maillet dates back to 1820 when the Moze Berthon Family staked their claim on this prime Pomerol real estate - and what real estate it is! Georges Moze was the first member to get involved in the wine business, already producing wine under the name Chateau Gouperie, with Maillet as the second wine label from this historically significant estate.
In 2009, everything changed. The Chateau started making L'Elegance, a merlot-driven masterpiece, and brought in Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus as their wine consultant. This led to the complete renovation of the Cellar of Pomerol and to the creation of Chateau Maillet: A reborn wine from the Pomerol appellation, made by an old and classic Chateau that sits in the shadow of greatness itself.
2022 is an absolutely stellar vintage for Bordeaux Right Bank. It was blessed with a 97-point review by Wine Spectator, who declared: "Merlot excelled; Cabernet Franc also relished the season. Wines are very aromatic and expressive, with Pomerol hedonistic and St.-Emilion well-defined. More consistent than the Left Bank. A beautiful vintage"
This isn't just wine - this is your ticket to tasting Petrus-level terroir without selling your firstborn.
Aging: Chateau Maillet is completely vinified in the barrel (alcoholic and malolactic fermentation) and it is also aged in a 100% new French oak barrel.
Tasting Notes
95 % Merlot 5 % Cabernet Franc. Garnet-purple color. On the nose, elegant notes of blueberries and blackberries, hints of mocha and cigar, and floral aromas like violets. On the palate, very structured, dark fruit, and long finish. This is still a baby. Aerate for 30+ minutes and cellar through 2032. Pair this wine with mostly all meats: veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes, Asian Cuisine, and pasta.
Critical Reviews
Plenty of sweet spices, dark chocolate, espresso beans, licorice and cigar box here, with concentrated, ripe blackberries that are still fresh and quite dense. Compressed and tannic, with full body and a very long finish that lasts over half a minute. This needs time to allow the extracted, dusty tannins to soften more. Drink after 2027. ~94 James Suckling
The wine's smoky aroma and solid tannins are cushioned by the rich, dense black fruits. It has a juicy character, full of berry flavors. Drink from 2027. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
Inky in colour and in texture, this is a visual capturing of the alcohol and heat of the vintage. As it unrolls in the glass it backs up this feeling with brushed damson and espresso, mint leaf and mandarin peel adding juice to the powerful raspberry puree. There is drama here, and high impact, but also good quality winemaking. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The nose is fresh and sappy. It reveals notes of small, dense/fresh black berries, concentrated blackcurrant and small notes of cherry blossom, iris associated with touches of fresh blue berries, saffron (in the floral side), fresh sap as well as a hint of graphite and tea. The palate is flowery, balanced and offers freshness, minerality, a fresh/juicy frame, certain tension, accuracy, fine fat, roundness as well as good definition. In the mouth this wine expresses notes of fresh blackberry, violet/iris and small notes of sap associated with touches of crushed blackcurrant, pulpy cherry as well as touches of tangy/juicy berries and fresh pepper. Good length. Beautiful freshness. ~91 VertdeVin
