About The Wine

Pomerol is the smallest of Bordeaux's great red appellations — and one of its most expensive. It's home to Pétrus and Le Pin, names that trade in the thousands. Tour Maillet sits in the same appellation, makes the same 100% Merlot, and costs a fraction of what those bottles do. That's the pitch, and it holds up.

This is a real family estate. The Lagardères settled in Pomerol just after the war and have farmed here for four generations; Gaël Lagardère runs it today. The vineyard is tiny — 2.2 hectares of old Merlot vines averaging 35 years, on Pomerol's siliceous-gravel soil. Farming is sustainable and done by hand, with consulting from the Michel Rolland team. The wine spends 12 months in French oak, half of it new. Total production is roughly 1,000 cases.

The critics noticed — Jeb Dunnuck called the 2022 gorgeously concentrated, and it took a Gold medal in Paris and two stars in the Guide Hachette. Open it now with a grilled ribeye, or lay it down; it'll hold 15 to 20 years. Real Pomerol, no asterisks.

100% Merlot. Brilliant purple color. The bouquet is both powerful and refined, expressed in oaky, fruity, and spicy notes in tone with the region and the vintage. The palate is balanced. Its warm character is underpinned by the roundness of the dark rich fruit and very elegant tannins.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Château Tour Maillet is a 100% Merlot cuvée that delivers darker fruits, graphite, and serious minerality on the nose. Gorgeously concentrated on the palate, it has fine, ripe tannins, a broad mid-palate, and a layered, round, and textured mouthfeel. A serious, structured wine that spent 16 months in 50% new oak barrels, it should evolve gracefully for 20+ years. Total production: 1,083 cases. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

Good depth and complexity, with fine wood spices, dark cherries, cassis, berries and touches of dark chocolate and tar. The tight and almost full-bodied palate is packed with dense, dark fruit. Long and structured in the finish, with a balsamic touch at the end. Concentrated and structured. Drink from 2027. ~94 James Suckling

Potent and intense on the nose, forward and expressive. Smooth and supple on the palate, lovely agility but with grippy tannins that cushion the fruit and provide a wide structure for the wine. Dense but refined, weighty but not too much, with cool blue fruit touches and edges of florality throughout. Nicely worked with lots of energy and style. Tannins are grippy and hold the interest, needing to soften in the future, but this has clarity and nice detail. A bit more serious than some by the finish, the concentration and intensity showing through with subtle touches of liquorice, clove and toast. 2.2ha vineyard. Ageing 12 months, 50% new, 50% one wine barrels. Rolland & Associés consultants. ~92 Decanter
