About The Wine

The 2022 Chateau Mouton Rothschild represents the zenith of Bordeaux winemaking, crafted in the prestigious Pauillac appellation. Mouton Rothschild’s vineyards are situated on the gravelly banks of the Gironde River, where the combination of deep, well-drained soils and a temperate climate provides ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional depth and complexity. The estate’s terroir has earned it a reputation as one of the most prestigious in Bordeaux, with the unique blend of sun, soil, and maritime influence yielding wines with great structure and aging potential.

The Rothschild family, stewards of Chateau Mouton since the mid-19th century, have been central to the estate’s ascent to the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Originally owned by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, Mouton was officially promoted to First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a distinction that solidified its place among the world’s finest wines. The estate has since passed down through the generations, with Baroness Philippine de Rothschild leading the estate to even greater heights until her passing in 2014. Today, the estate is under the management of her children, Baroness Philippine's children, who continue to uphold the legacy of excellence, preserving the family’s commitment to tradition while embracing innovation.

2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."

Aging: Aged in 100% new French oak for 15 months.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot. The 2022 Mouton Rothschild offers a captivating bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis, intertwined with aromas of chocolate, tobacco, and Asian spices. Hints of smokiness and tobacco leaf add complexity, while a touch of cedar and earthy notes deepen the experience. The palate is dense and opulent, with velvety tannins and rich, dark fruit flavors.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Wow. The aromas here are so complete with blackcurrants, asphalt, violets, lead pencil, orange blossoms and black truffles. A perfect nose. It's full-bodied yet tied down with seamless tannins that run the length of the wine and give such a seductive mouthfeel and persistence. A vintage with one of the highest percentages of cabernet sauvignon ever. Quintessential, great Bordeaux with no limits. Drink after 2028. ~100 James Suckling

Bottled in June of 2024, the 2022 Chateau Mouton Rothschild checks in as classic blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that was raised all in new barrels. Incredibly concentrated yet light on its feet and graceful, this inky-hued beauty has sensational notes of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and chocolate that are to die for. It shows the ripe, opulent style of the vintage yet brings sensational purity, loads of tannins, and a gorgeous finish. For the tech geeks out there, this hit 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.86, and an IPT (tannins) of 76. It has the depth of fruit and texture to offer incredible pleasure even today, yet it deserves a decade of bottle age and will evolve for 50-60 years. It reminds me of a mix of the 2009 and 2010. ~100 Jeb Dunnuck

Deep garnet-purple colored, after a swirl or two of coaxing, it charges out of the gate with powerful notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and violets, followed by hints of camphor, iron ore, and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is densely packed with rich, opulent black fruit layers, supported by superbly ripe tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and multi-layered. A real wow wine! ~100 The Wine Palate

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate rim brightening. Ripe cherries and plums, fine nougat, a touch of precious wood, multi-faceted bouquet. Powerful, substantial, black berries, ripe, supporting tannins, fine extract sweetness, mineral-salty finish, Vieilles Vignes character, very great length, secure future ageing potential. Shows no opulence, all of a piece. ~100 Falstaff

The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is a powerhouse. Inky, deep and explosive, the 2022 is a real head-turner. The combination of intense dark fruit, strong gravelly/mineral notes and imposing structure clearly bring to mind another great Mouton, and that is the 1986. In a word: magnificent. The blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. ~97 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is one of the most muscular, almost brutally powerful wines of the vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet crème de cassis mingled with notions of espresso roast, pencil lead and petroleum jelly, it's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with huge reserves of tannin and fruit. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that represents 49% of the estate's production, this is a prodigious Mouton that's built for the cellar. ~97 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Big and bold, this is a classic Mouton, with the difference of acidity and freshness. The wine's structure shows some powerful tannins, giving richness balanced by a crisp touch at the end. ~97 Wine Enthusiast
