About the Wine
Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Emilión, a 17th-century castle, great wines made with the heart, spectacular views, and completely modern enology, is how we can begin to explain Château Troplong Mondot.
Located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, in the magnificent appellation of Saint-Emilion is Château Troplong Mondot, a Château that will take us back to the 17th century. The first owners were the Seze family, they were in charge of the construction of the spectacular castle that can be found today on the property; This castle has a great history and continues to preserve its old roots and architecture, but in 2019 it was modernized and adapted for the total comfort of tourists. An unmissable place!
The Château passed to the hands of Mr. Raymon Troplong, giving the estate its current name. After having gone through different owners, where each one of them contributed to the history of the Château; In 1936 it became the property of the Valette family and it remained that way until 2017. By 1936 Christine Valette took control of the property and achieved great changes in the Château, both in the vineyards and in the cellar, they began to modernize and achieved more quality. These improvements quickly established Château Troplong Mondot as one of the most acclaimed in Saint-Emilion. In fact, this Château belongs to the Grand Crus Classés of the Saint-Emilion Wine Classification.
Château Troplong Mondot has been fortunate to be guided by some of the best winemakers in the world, including Michelle Rolland, Jean-Philippe Fort, Thomas Duclos, and Aymeric de Gironde; The latter is the current Wine Director. Currently, this Château belongs to the French Insurance company SOCR who has also contributed very positive things to the property, and has achieved remarkable growth.
Château Troplong Mondot's nearly 100-acre vineyard is nestled in the enviable terroir of Saint-Emilion. This Château is located at the highest point of the appellation and is made up of limestone and clay soils. The combination of its nearly perfect terroir results in frank, balanced and very elegant wines. In other words, Extraordinary!
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 97 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling"
Tasting Notes
85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc. Red wine. Blackberry, blueberry, black-truffle, bark, and stone character. Medium to full-bodied. Rounded, expansive texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, building tannins, and present oak. Pair this wine with veal, lamb, and game.
Critical Reviews
~#92 Top 100 Wines of 2025 by James Suckling
The 2022 Troplong Mondot has turned out brilliantly in bottle. Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and blackberries mingled with notions of licorice, rose petals, incense and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with huge mid-palate volume, superb integration and an ineffable sense of completeness. This site always delivers power, but I've never tasted a Troplong that's simultaneously quite so powerful or quite so harmonious and suave. Concluding with a broad, violet-inflected finish, the 2022 represents the essence of this remarkable site. ~100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Glorious aromatics burst out of the glass with scents of dried herbs, tobacco, mint and blackcurrant. Sumptuous and filling in the best way, the texture, weight and depth of the flavours here is seriously impressive - round and wide but so finessed so that it doesn't feel too heavy. Restrained power with such confidence. Balanced, harmonious and totally moreish, this is an incredible wine that already feels so approachable. Tannins are flawless and the juicy berry fruit with soft salted liquorice edges give nuance and interest. Still a little shy but such potential here. Wonderful. ~99 Decanter
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Troplong Mondot is quite closed to begin, needing a lot of patient swirling to bring out aromas of fresh blueberries, plum preserves, and juicy blackberries, plus hints of violets, dark chocolate, and wild sage. The full-bodied palate is full-on impactful with bags of black and blue fruit flavors and a firm, velvety texture, supported by seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. I love the restraint and effortless beauty of this wine! ~99 The Wine Palate
A wine of elegance and precision, the 2022 Troplong Mondot is exquisite. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, blood orange, spice and menthol race across the palate. Troplong Mondot is without question one of the silkiest, most refined wines of the vintage. Absolutely nothing is out of place. ~98 Vinous Media
I was able to taste the 2022 Château Troplong Mondot on two separate occasions, and it never failed to impress. A blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc, it was raised in 55% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels and foudre. It's an incredibly pure, precise, seamless Saint-Emilion that has vibrant black raspberry and darker cherry fruits as well as hints of graphite, spring flowers, and damp earth. This medium to full-bodied, layered, nicely concentrated 2022 has polished tannins, a lively spine of acidity, and flawless overall balance. It's the finest vintage I've tasted at this château since the 2015. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck
Hyper precision from the crushed-stone minerality here, with berries, spiced dark cherries, hibiscus and fresh plums. Extremely polished yet vivid, with fibrous, chalky tannins emitting vibrations before dissolving into a lengthy finish drenched with fruit. Concentrated but effortless. Already alluring but better in 3-4 years. ~98 James Suckling
The wine has a silky texture, with ripe black tannins, fine acidity and black fruits. The wine is both succulent and seriously structured. It is one of the best from this estate in many years and shows great tension, depth and a long-term promise. ~98 Wine Enthusiast
Deeply colored, the wine is rich, deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and intense The depth of flavor, the fullness on the palate, and the silky, lush, creamy textures come across as gentle, vibrant, and elegant, with a lot of depth and width. The lingering finish displays sweet, red, and black fruits, a salted, orange citrus tone, and a beautiful chalky character on the backend. The wine blends 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. ~98 The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Nuances of ripe cherries, hints of liquorice, red fruit in the background, a hint of tangerine, floral touch. Juicy, elegant, silky and mineral, fine fruit expression, pleasant acidity, ripe, supporting tannins, delicious and lasting. Shows incredible length and freshness, certain ageing potential, for decades. ~98 Falstaff
Smooth, stately, rich, powerful, this is just full of delight, rose petals, orange peel, orange flower water, cocoa bean, flint, graphite, fennel, chalk, harnessing the complexity of these 360-degree-orientated soils. Get the precision and the skilful winemaking coming through in the glass. Clearly needs time to age, full of architectural prowess. A brilliant reminder that terroir in certain spots in undeniable, and makes itself felt even with all of the changes put in by the new owners since 2017. Thomas Duclos. A touch of whole bunch fermentation, no fining, low filtration. 55% new oak, 25% oak casks, 25% of one year, 1st year with wax closure for Troplong first wine. Remi Monribot cellar master, Aymeric de Gironde director ~97 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
It is largely scaled wine with loads of creamy fruit, fat tannins, and a vibrant character. It has a great midpalate, a strong backbone, and a long finish. It’s a top wine in a modern style. ~97 Great Wines from Bordeaux
