About the Wine

Some wines mark a turning point in an estate’s history—the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille is one of them. A wine of precision, depth, and seamless power, this vintage represents a new chapter for the château, benefiting from the first fully operational vintage in its state-of-the-art gravity-fed cellar and a refined approach in both vineyard and winery.

Crafted from 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Trotte Vieille is a remarkable expression of Saint-Émilion’s limestone terroir. The nose is aromatic and captivating, unfolding with layers of dark berries, violets, rose petals, and incense, intertwined with hints of mint, blood orange, and exotic spices.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably structured, delivering a balance of intensity and elegance. Silky, chalky tannins create a finely woven texture, while a backbone of vibrant acidity provides tension and drive. There is power, but also restraint, with a long, saline finish that lingers, leaving an impression of both precision and completeness.

Ranked #31 in James Suckling’s Top 100 French Wines of 2025, this is more than just a turning point—it’s a landmark bottle already recognized among France’s finest.

The 2022 vintage showcased this philosophy perfectly. Despite intense heat and drought that challenged vineyards across Bordeaux, Calicem emerged triumphant. Wine Spectator's 97-point assessment of the vintage confirms what the estate already knew: "A beautiful vintage. Merlot berries were small and concentrated; Cabernet Franc also relished the conditions. Wines are very aromatic and sleek, with Pomerol and St.-Emilion excelling."

Aging: 100% new French oak barrels, enhancing depth and structure while allowing the wine’s vibrant fruit and refined tannins to shine.

Tasting Notes

A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille is a strikingly complex and structured Saint-Émilion. Aromas of dark berries, violets, rose petals, and incense mingle with hints of mint, blood orange, and exotic spices. The palate is full-bodied yet refined, with silky, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity, leading to a precise, layered, and saline finish. Powerful yet poised, intense yet elegant, this is a wine of remarkable balance and aging potential.

#76 Top 100 Wines of 2025 by James Suckling
What fantastic aromas of dark fruits. At the same time, there’s a savory character of mushrooms, lead pencil, violets, bark and wet earth that always remains complex and sophisticated. It's medium- to full-bodied with very tight and fine tannins that run the full length of the wine. Wonderful polish and refinement. Classy. A bottle for your cellar. 50% cabernet franc, 45% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2030. ~98 James Suckling

Concentrated and expressive aromas - the TrotteVieille signature scents emerge from the glass of tobacco, liquorice, dark chocolate, roses, violets and sweet blackcurrants. Smooth and determined, this pulses with energy and cooling freshness from the start, so juicy on the mid palate, mouthwateringly so but with a soft sweetness that is really pleasant and together with slightly chewy tannins gives a plentiful mouthfeel. Tannins have a salty grip and this ends mineral with a crushed stone salinity. The finish is a touch narrow suggesting this wine has such a long life ahead yet it's one I immediately wanted another glass of and is delicious to drink even now! ~98 Decanter

My rough note on the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille included more than one expletive, and this beauty is straight-up gorgeous. Vivid blue fruits, violets, flowers, and chocolate all make an appearance on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered texture, perfect tannins, and nicely integrated oak. Based on 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it remains to be seen if this will ultimately match the magical 2020, but we're not far off. This is a château readers need to have on their radar. ~95-97 JD

The quality of the 2022 Trotte Vieille took me by surprise, but clearly more diligent viticulture, combined with a new winery equipped with fully 26 vats for the estate's 11 hectares of vineyards, is beginning to pay off, as this is the most complete, integrated young wine I have ever tasted at this address. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, violets and incense, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of vibrant fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, saline finish. A blend of fully 50% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, it derives exclusively from Trotte Vieille's historic clay-limestone walled vineyard. ~94-96 WA

The 2022 Trotte Vieille is a hugely intriguing wine. The aromatics alone are wonderfully alluring. Sweet red-toned fruit, mint, blood orange, spice, licorice and rose petal infuse the 2022 with compelling inner perfume. Layered and complex, with tons of character, Trotte Vieille is shaping up to be terrific. In 2022, Trotte Vieille is not as bombastic as it has been in some recent years, and that is a positive. ~94-96 AG-VM

The 2022 Trotte Vieille represents the first year when all the Cabernet Sauvignon entered the Grand Vin (5%). Picked from 2 to 27 September, it is aged entirely in new oak. It has an intense bouquet that is well-defined albeit coated with the oak at the moment - this will be subsumed with time. There is an underlying orange pith/tangerine element lending nuance. The palate is very harmonious on the entry with pliant tannins. Very precise, silky smooth in texture thanks to the use of their new cuveries equipped with smaller vats. The acidity is nicely judged, opulent yet controlled with a touch of white pepper right on the finish. Very stylish. ~94-96 NM-VM
