About The Wine

In 1987, Cathy Corison became the first woman winemaker-proprietor in Napa Valley — and promptly started aging wines most people would have sold immediately. The cornerstone bottling since day one, this Cabernet is grown on benchland between Rutherford and St. Helena, soil that's been producing legendary Cabs for generations.

Corison's approach was radical for Napa in the '80s: structured wines built for aging, with snappy natural acidity, moderate alcohol, and bright flavors instead of the extraction-and-oak bombs that defined the era. She knew the fruit would age because the land had proven it for decades before she ever planted a vine. The winery produces just 3,000 cases a year, farming mostly dry and certified Napa Green and organic by CCOF.

The 2022 vintage threw challenges at everyone, but Corison captured it with the precision you'd expect from someone who's been doing this for 37 years. Lifted, fresh aromatics define the year. The wine spent 20 months in French oak, half new, and the result is medium-bodied and silky: black cherry, cassis, floral notes, fine tannins, fresh acidity. Tart and racy with a saline-mineral intensity that runs through the nose and the palate.

This is the Cabernet I'd open on a Tuesday with grilled ribeye and nothing to prove — a wine that doesn't shout, just delivers.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, this wine is tart and racy, with a red-toned fruit profile complemented by saline-mineral intensity on the nose and palate. Aromas of leather, green olive, and cherrywood add complexity. The palate is immediately enveloped by multidimensional tannins with a pixelated quality, arresting the senses before giving way to sanguine fruit and vibrant minerality. The finish is layered with notes of blood orange, citrus peel, sandalwood, and loamy earth. A testament to the winery, a Napa Valley staple since it opened its doors in 1987, this wine showcases precision and depth in every sip. ~95 Decanter

With signature poise and persistence, Corison 2022 Cabernet captures the opportunities of a challenging vintage showing both her skill as a winemaker and the strength of her vineyards. Lifted, fresh aromatics spin into flavors of dark fruits touched by espresso grounds, dry cocoa, and juicy finish. Tannins are approachable now, and will benefit from a meal, or several years in bottle. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

A bold and deep expression, packed with blackberries, blackcurrants, dark chocolate, black olives, dark earth and licorice. The full-bodied, dense and fruit-driven palate carries fine-grained tannins and is balanced with bright acidity, finishing with hints of mocha and wet stones. Try after 2027. ~ 93 James Suckling

Largely picked prior to the Labor Day heat wave, Corison's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the restrained, streamlined style that is a calling card of the winery. Marked by black cherries and loam, with subtle spice shadings from its 20 months in 50% new French oak, this medium-bodied wine maintains superb tension between acidity and alcohol and delivers a lingering, mouthwatering finish framed by soft tannins. ~92 Wine Advocate

Beautiful red and black fruits, spicy herbs, and savory, floral notes all shine in the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 20 months in 50% new French oak. This complex, medium-bodied, satisfying Cabernet Sauvignon has ripe, integrated tannins and outstanding length. It's ready to go, and I'd happily drink a bottle any time over the coming 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2037. ~ 91 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is polished and understated to the core. Lifted aromatics and silky tannins confer notable finesse. Readers will find a sublime, nuanced Cabernet of distinction. It’s the sort of wine that will blossom with time in bottle. I won't be surprised if it is even better in a few years. This is pure class. ~91 Vinous

Manages to show floral lift in the form of hibiscus and iris notes, while a relatively fresh streak of cassis and bitter plum coulis forms the core. Offers singed alder and savory notes on the tail end, with a slightly taut structure, but overall this does a good job of defying the odds in ’22. Drink now through 2032. ~ 91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Corison

Cathy Corison founded Corison Winery in 1987, becoming the first woman winemaker/proprietor in the Napa Valley. The winery is located in St. Helena, California in a barn designed and orchestrated by Corison's husband, William Martin. Corison Winery produces 3,000 cases a year. The winery makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gewürztraminer, Reisling and Rosé. The Kronos and Sunbasket Cabernet Sauvignons are made from CCOF certified organic grapes. The Kronos Vineyard was planted in 1971, one of the oldest vineyards in Napa Valley. The vineyards are mostly dry farmed. The winery and estate vineyards are Napa Green certified and certified organic by CCOF. Cathy Corison was the San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year in 2011. In 2025 the winery received the Golden Vines Sustainability Award from Liquid Icons in London.
