About The Wine

Patrimony is a steal when you stack it against Napa's cult Cabernets like Opus One ($600+) or Hundred Acre ($1,000+)—it's not even close. In fact, in blind tastings, Patrimony has consistently ranked as people's top choice, while those big-name bottles finish last. This is Daniel Daou's masterwork, positioned as California's answer to a Bordeaux first-growth and named for "gift from the father"—the legacy he and Georges are leaving to their children. Every bottle is molded with "Legatum Nostrum" (Our Legacy). The inaugural 2013 vintage earned 98 points from Robert Parker, and every release since has cemented Patrimony's place among California's most collectible Cabernets.

The magic starts at 2,200 feet on DAOU Mountain in the Adelaida District, where ancient calcareous soils—the same chalk and limestone that define Bordeaux and Burgundy—produce Cabernet with extraordinary structure. But it's the barrel program that sets Patrimony apart: oak trees from Bordeaux, seasoned on the mountain, then sent to a custom cooper for Burgundy-style treatment—tight grain, long low toast. The result is what they call the "cashmere effect": silky, integrated tannins with zero harshness. Daniel Daou is vegan and makes his wines balanced and food-versatile from release—this shines with everything from truffle risotto to filet mignon.

Patrimony's leadership team brings together exceptional talent from Napa Valley's most prestigious wine estates. Estate Director Erik Johnson honed his expertise as Head Sommelier at The French Laundry, while the team is rounded out by talent from iconic producers including Opus One and Heitz Cellar, bringing decades of experience from the region's finest wineries to this ambitious Paso Robles project.

The 2022 Patrimony opens with rum-soaked cherries, wild roses, and redcurrants, layered with tobacco, lavender, and vanilla bean. It's elegant and silky with an almost molten chocolate texture—that signature "cashmere effect" in full display.

Crushed wild berries ride a core of vibrant acidity, framed by generous, powdery tannins that never turn harsh. The finish is long with lingering blackberries, mocha, and delicate floral notes. Wonderfully balanced and drinking beautifully now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The flagship Cabernet, boasting a vivid ruby/purple hue, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a terrific nose of crème de cassis, violets, sweet flowers, spicy oak, and cigar box. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 30 months in new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with remarkable purity, ultra-fine tannins, and flawless balance. This is another brilliant wine from this estate. Drink 2025-2045. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

Powerful, polished and full of momentum, this shines with ripe purple-berry fruit and plums, black figs and bruised blueberries as well as incense, crushed violets and ganache. With air, graphite joins in. So supple. The lingering tannins are long and sweet. Drink or hold for the long-haul. ~96 James Suckling

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Patrimony is dark and powerful, with an expressive bouquet of black cherries, cassis, baking spice, rose petals and cedar spice box. Undeniable elegance is on display as it washes across the palate with textures of pure silk, showing oak-infused red and black fruits elevated by a core of mocha and a framework of sweet tannins. Harmonious and long, it leaves rum-soaked currants and nuances of spiced orange, while a twang of residual acidity maintains unexpected energy and verve. ~95 Vinous Media

The 2022 Patrimony is a barrel sample of Cabernet Sauvignon, maturing for 30 months in 100% new French oak. It takes some time in the glass to reveal red and black currants, blueberry, licorice, soy, cocoa powder and desert herbs. The full-bodied palate is plush, supple and inviting with mineral-driven fruit and a juicy, floral finish. It is due to be bottled in March of 2025. ~95 Wine Advocate

Dark black fruits, cedar wood, vanilla and spice aromas. On the palate, barrel tannins dominate, along with blackberry, bramble and dark chocolate. Usually a benchmark California Cabernet Sauvignon (100%), this iteration of Patrimony will need time to develop cohesion and for tannins to resolve. Tasted as a barrel sample to be released in August 2025. ~93 Decanter
