About The Wine

The Figgins family helped write the story of Walla Walla wine. Gary Figgins founded Leonetti Cellar in 1977 as the valley's pioneering modern winery, and his son, Chris Figgins — Leonetti's longtime director of winemaking — went on to create FIGGINS as his own ambitious, terroir-driven project.

Where Leonetti draws on multiple sites, FIGGINS exists to do one thing: express a single piece of ground. That ground is the Figgins Estate Vineyard, a 32-acre site planted high in the foothills of the Blue Mountains — a cool, high-elevation, later-ripening location that has quickly earned a reputation as one of the emerging "Grand Crus" of Washington State.

The Estate Red is the flagship of that vision: a Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant Bordeaux-style blend rounded out with Merlot and Petit Verdot, drawn entirely from estate fruit and matured for 22 months in French oak.

The 2022 comes from what Chris Figgins calls "the Miracle Vintage" — one of the coolest growing seasons of his career, with an impossibly late spring rescued by a record-warm October that delivered ripeness in the final hour. Aged in 70% new and 30% neutral French oak and produced in just 1,782 cases, it pairs full-bodied density with a cool-vintage sense of freshness and lift, and is built to reward years in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 FIGGINS Red Wine is a proprietary blend of of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot all coming from the Figgins Estate Vineyard. Stored in 70% new French oak, this delivers a knockout bouquet of graphite and tar alongside suggestions of huckleberry compote, mocha, and black licorice. The heady aromatics bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment. While this comes off initially aromatically reticent, after an hour of air this really sings in its high octave. The palate is plush as velvety tannins frame a glorious core of black and blue fruits, with menthol, dark chocolate shavings and stony mineral accents. This really needs at least another year or two of bottle age — but shows massive aging potential. ~ 98 Owen Bargreen

This has a fragrant array of cedar, bay leaves, cloves, dried flowers, walnuts and blackberries on the nose. It’s full-bodied but elegant and lively on the palate, with firm yet fine-grained tannins. Sleek, linear and poised. Very classy and fresh at the end. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Try from 2028. ~97 James Suckling

A proprietary (and undisclosed) blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from Figgins Estate Vineyard, the 2022 Estate Red Wine opens in an herbal, earthy intensity of sage, cedar, and crushed stone. The full-bodied density opens slowly on the palate to show floral aromatics and rich red fruit, structured to age another 12-15 years. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Estate Red Wine opens with a cool-toned and remarkably pretty mix of dusty dried strawberries, mint leaf, sage and shavings of fresh cedar. It is deeply textural, silken and serene, with polished red berry fruits complicated by chalky mineral tones and a saturation of liquid rose toward the close. The 2022 finishes with fantastic length as sweet tannins resonate over a core of tart cherry, leaving a pleasantly chewy sensation. ~96 Vinous Media

Densely structured and a bit taut at the moment, this red offers robust flavors of black cherry and blueberry laced with tobacco and mineral tones. Gathers tension and tannins on the finish. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2035. 1,782 cases made. ~ 92 Wine Spectator
