About The Wine

Monte Foscarino is an extinct volcano in the Soave Classico hills east of Verona. Its slopes are cut into wide terraces lined with Garganega on pergolas. Those terraces are the palchi on the label. The vines run 30 to 70 years old, rooted in basalt lava and volcanic tuff with seams of iron-red clay. Wind off Lake Garda keeps the berries small and the skins thick.

Giuseppe Inama started buying vineyard plots in Soave in the 1950s. His son Stefano runs the estate now, with the third generation working beside him. Stefano’s rule for great Soave is short: “You mustn’t over-crop, and you must use minimalistic oenology.”

I Palchi is the family’s top Garganega, a selection of the best small plots in those old pergola vineyards. The grapes are picked by hand. Half the juice ferments in large casks, about a third in barriques and the rest in stainless steel. The lees get stirred regularly while the wine rests in wood.

The 2022 comes out full and silky, with ripe stone fruit, citrus peel and a smoky, peppery edge. The acidity stays bright from the first sip to the last.

This is the bottle I’d use to show someone how serious Italian white wine gets. It drinks well tonight with roast chicken or fish in brown butter. It will also hold in the cellar for a few years if you can wait.

100% Garganega. The nose is smoky and expressive, with rosemary, ginger spice, Williams pear and musky citrus over crushed apple. On the palate it’s full-bodied and silky, with ripe stone fruit, mango and lemon peel carried by bright, mineral acidity. The finish is long and savory, with a peppery edge.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

“A complex, mineral wine with apricots and lemon peel, angelica and mangoes. Full-bodied and richly flavored with mango and citrus flavors, vibrant and mineral acidity and a smooth finish. Precise and refreshing. Fermented and aged in large oak barrels. Drink or hold.” ~96 James Suckling

“This is the top-end Garganega from the talented Inama family. It included the words “Grande Cuvée” in its name until the previous vintage made. The 2022 Soave Classico Foscarino I Palchi is a beautiful wine with a tight vein of crispness and lemony tartness that follows the wine from start to finish, giving it firmness and lasting staying power. There is ample textural fiber at the back, more than enough to make this wine feel important and multidimensional. This 17-hectare vineyard sits in basalt lava soils. The wine is partially fermented in oak (with 30% neutral and new barrique and 50% botte grande) and 20% in stainless steel. Production is 10,000 bottles.” ~94 Wine Advocate

“A bright straw yellow with a golden shimmer. Compact and multi-layered on the nose, yellow fruit, some Williams pear, with plenty of spices, white pepper and cardamom. Powerful and peppery on the palate, animated, with a long, savoury finish.” ~94 Falstaff
