About the Wine
With over 35 years of winemaking brilliance, John Duval is one of Australia's most celebrated legends. In 2010, wine critic Robert Parker hailed him as an "Australian Wine Legend," a title that speaks to his unmatched influence on the world of wine.
The Duval name has a deep, rich history in Australian winemaking, with family vineyards in South Australia supplying grapes to the country’s finest producers for over a century. Today, John Duval Wines carries this proud legacy, rooted in vineyards that date back to the second half of the 19th century. With more than five generations of winemaking expertise, Duval’s visionary approach transformed his family's grape-growing tradition into one of the most renowned labels in the industry.
After studying at the University of Adelaide in 1973, Duval’s journey began at the iconic Penfolds winery. By 1986, he became the third winemaker in Penfolds' history, apprenticing under legends Don Ditter and Max Schubert, the masterminds behind the world-famous "Grange." Duval played a pivotal role in elevating Penfolds to international acclaim. During his 29 years there, he received accolades like UK Wine & Spirit’s International Winemaker of the Year, Red Winemaker of the Year (twice), and Wine Spectator's coveted Wine of the Year award.
In 2003, Duval ventured into creating his own label, and the world was introduced to Plexus—a stunning blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. The following year, he launched Entity, a Shiraz that captures the essence of the Barossa Valley’s old vines, sourced from legendary sub-regions like Stockwell, Light Pass, Krondorf, and Marananga.
John Duval Entity Shiraz is a tribute to the land, the climate, and the vine. It’s a wine that blends lush fruitiness with undeniable elegance, capturing the soul of Australia’s most iconic grape—Syrah. With every sip, you’ll fall in love with the expressive, age-worthy flavors that make Duval’s wines legendary.
Not just an Australian rockstar, Duval’s influence extends globally. He’s also a consulting winemaker at Viña Ventisquero in Chile’s Apalta Valley and a partner at Longshadows in Washington State.
Tasting Notes
100% Shiraz. Intense aromas of dark berries, plum, and boysenberry, hints of anise and clove. Excellent concentration of layered rich dark fruits, hints of dark chocolate, and earth. Firm tannins and long finish. Pair this wine with semi-hard cheeses and red-grilled meats.
Critical Reviews
Velvety opulence speaks from the moment this hits your tongue until the last drop disappears. It’s a luxurious take on the grandeur of fit, medium-bodied Shiraz, putting plush red berry characteristics on a pedestal, encasing them gently in oak and fine-gain tannin, then allowing them to saunter gracefully down the long catwalk before sashaying out the exit curtain. Bravo! Further ageing will only enhance its beauty. ~96 Decanter
Ripe but very attractive black and blue fruit with cooking spices, sandalwood and hints of tar. Focused and vivid on the palate with medium to full body and fine, well-integrated tannins. It is juicy and agile with some dusty mineral nuances and hints of white pepper at the end. Long finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~94 James Suckling
The 2022 Entity Shiraz is 85% Barossa Valley and 15% Eden Valley. The palate is, as this producer is so consistently capable of, supple and polished, with brilliant fruit clarity and poise. The framing of the 2022 vintage works in the favor of this wine; it is more bulbous and rounded than the 2021 tasted beside it, but I like it; it balances the heady fruit and brings pleasure and chew and bounce to the wine. Excellent. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. ~94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The stylish 2022 Shiraz Entity offers fine and detailed aromas of dried meats and dark cherry with a strong seam of crushed cloves. It is dry, mid-weight and quite Rhône with meat and spice flavors, with a fresh line of acidity leading to a very long and refined finish. The 2022 is charming and should age well. ~94 Vinous Media
An elegant red, whose bright, juicy mouthful of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate flavors expands to notes of rose petal, spices, cedar and salted black licorice. The tannins show polish and a touch of creaminess on the finish. Drink now through 2034. ~92 Wine Spectator
