About The Wine

Ledge Vineyards sits atop a flat panoramic ledge of sandstone, sand, and clay in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles — land that winemaker Mark Adams grew up on, and that his parents acquired in the mid-1970s as a cattle ranch. It wasn't until 2005 that Mark transformed the property, planting the first vines own-root and largely dry-farmed across what is now a 20-acre estate of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Counoise, and white Rhône varieties. His formation came alongside childhood friend Justin Smith, whom he joined as an early employee at Saxum Vineyards — situated just a mile away — where he helped craft wines that earned Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2010. By 2009, Ledge had its first estate harvest, and the wines quickly earned a reputation for a distinctly old-world restraint: precision and freshness over extraction, driven by the estate's cool, sandy soils and minimal-intervention winemaking approach.

The Estate Grenache Blend is Ledge's Southern Rhône-inspired expression of the Adams Ranch Vineyard, and the 2022 vintage takes a notably Syrah-forward turn: 60% Grenache co-blended with 40% Syrah, giving the wine a meatier, more peppery edge than the more Grenache-dominant iterations of previous years. Still entirely from the estate's own-rooted, dry-farmed vines, the 2022 showcases the ripe, open-knit charm of the vintage while maintaining the structural backbone and Châteauneuf du Pape-like character that has become Ledge's calling card in this bottling.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Grenache Estate Blend has a solid dose of Syrah (40%), and that certainly gives it a meatier, more peppery edge. Ripe red and black fruits, leather, flowery incense, and tons of peppery spice notes all define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and fine, polished tannins. It shows the ripe, sexy, open-knit, incredibly charming style of the vintage beautifully. Drink this top Chateauneuf du Pape look-alike over the coming decade. ~ 96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Grenache Blend Adams Ranch Vineyard Estate is more savory than sweet, wafting up with a woodland-inspired bouquet of wild berries and spice offset by cedar shavings. Lifted and graceful in style, it displays a pretty inner sweetness as violet pastille complements wild blueberries. The finish is long and potent, with a saturation of primary fruit and crunchy tannins that resonate. The 2022 is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. ~ 94 Vinous Media

Made with 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, a blend of this kind all too easily falls into being dominated by one or the other variety, but the 2022 Estate Grenache Blend does an admirable job of threading the needle. It is harmonious and poised on the nose, with bright, red-fruited energy underpinned by turned earth, wet clay and wild herb aromas. The palate is rich, svelte and dense but welcomely lined with succulent acidity that seamlessly leads the transition to a powerful, rich, thunderous finish framed by fine, structured tannins and new-oak flavors that should integrate with time. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The nose is lifted and perfumed, with aromas of dark cherries, potpourri and wild raspberries. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright acidity, showing notes of plums, mocha, red currants and cassia bark. A blend of 60% grenache and 40% syrah that has a balanced of freshness and power. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling
