About The Wine

Ledge Vineyards sits atop a flat panoramic ledge of sandstone, sand, and clay in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles — land that winemaker Mark Adams grew up on, and that his parents acquired in the mid-1970s as a cattle ranch.

It wasn't until 2005 that Mark transformed the property, planting the first vines own-root and largely dry-farmed across what is now a 20-acre estate of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Counoise, and white Rhône varieties. His formation came alongside childhood friend Justin Smith, whom he joined as an early employee at Saxum Vineyards — situated just a mile away — where he helped craft wines that earned Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2010. By 2009, Ledge had its first estate harvest, and the wines quickly earned a reputation for a distinctly old-world restraint: lower in alcohol than the Paso norm, marked by freshness, ultra-fine tannins, and a site-driven transparency that critics have consistently drawn to the Northern Rhône.

The Estate Syrah is Ledge's flagship expression of the Adams Ranch Vineyard — own-rooted vines grown in the cool, sandy soils of the Willow Creek District, dry-farmed and co-fermented with native yeasts.

The 2022 is 96% Syrah with 2% each of Cinsault and Grenache, entirely from the estate's sandy soils, and aged 20 months in 70% new French and Hungarian oak. It is at once an estate statement and a benchmark for what west-side Paso Robles Syrah is capable of.

Drinking Window: Already offers pleasure now; will evolve gracefully for at least 10–12 years.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

More pure blackberry, pepper, leather, and gamey, iron-like nuances emerge from the 2022 Syrah Estate, a rich, medium to full-bodied Syrah that’s loaded with sweet fruit. As with just about all 2022s, it already offers pleasure yet given its overall purity, balance, concentration, and freshness, it should evolve gracefully for at least 10-12 years. The 2022 is 96% Syrah and 2% each of Cinsault and Grenache, all from sandy soils of the estate Adams Ranch Vineyard, aged in 70% new barrels. ~ 96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Syrah Adams Ranch Vineyard Estate is exotic and perfumed, wafting up with an enticing blend of citrus-laced blackberry, lavender pastille and nuance of wet stone. Cool-toned and sleek, it offers lifting acidity and bright red rather than black fruit on the palate, as saline mineral tones mingle with rosy inner floral toward the close. The finish is long and staining, leaving a web of fine tannins and a hint of crushed blueberry that lingers. ~ 95 Vinous Media

The nose gives lifted aromas of red currants, potpourri and earth. The palate is full-bodied with silky tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of dark chocolate, mocha, black olives and cured meat. Very pure and refined. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Winemaker Mark Adams does an admirable job of instilling the natural exuberance of Paso Robles fruit with a focused, balanced core, of which the 2022 Estate Syrah is a great example. It leads with a pure, luscious, floral nose of blackberry compote, eucalyptus and purple flowers that take on increasingly savory, metallic notes with aeration. The palate beautifully balances intense opulence with focused precision, leading to a rich, decadent yet expansive finish with impressive length and well-integrated tannins. I found this to be one of the more nuanced wines in the range, and it should be a pleasure to watch evolve. ~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
