About The Wine

The Kreydenweiss family's roots in Andlau's vineyards stretch back to the 18th century, when their forebears the Gresser family tended vines and ran a mill for the Abbey. By 1850 Alfred Gresser was bottling his own wines; in 1918 Fernand sold the mill to focus entirely on wine. After WWII, Denise and Rene Kreydenweiss shifted from wholesale to direct sales, and in 1971 Marc Kreydenweiss took the reins — pushing the domaine toward pure terroir expression through biodynamic viticulture and founding the Biodyvin organization in 1989.

Moenchberg — also called "Le Moine" — is one of Alsace's great Grand Cru sites, and this is the 2022 Pinot Gris from that hillside. Marc and son Manfred made the wine after their biodynamic conversion, fermenting fruit sourced from six local vignerons farming organically or biodynamically, and letting certain cuvees mature on lees for extended periods.

The wine pours a vibrant gold — the result of age and residual sugar. The nose shows honey, exotic spices, confected pip and stone fruits, and tropical notes. Quince jelly and mango sit above stewed apricot and yellow plums. Moenchberg's trademark acidity has softened over the years but still anchors the fruit and tertiary richness, keeping the wine lively and defined.

This is Alsace Grand Cru Pinot Gris with real depth and a decade of evolution behind it — the kind of wine that reminds you why the region's best whites belong in serious cellars. Pull the cork tonight or let it ride another five years.

Vibrant gold in the glass. Honey, exotic spices, confected pip and stone fruits on the nose. Quince jelly and mango over stewed apricot and yellow plums. Round yet linear palate — slightly sweet, tangily sour, with pip fruits, grapes, stone fruits, and zesty lime. Moenchberg's trademark acidity softened with age but still provides the supporting role.

What the Critics Said

THE PRODUCER

Moenchberg

The Kreydenweiss family can trace their roots in Andlau's vines back to the 18th century where their forebears the Gresser family grew grapes and ran a mill on behalf of the Abbey. In 1850 Alfred Gresser began bottling his own wines. Fernand decided to sell off the family's mill in 1918 and concentrate on the wine business. After WWII, Denise and her husband René Kreydenweiss transitioned the family business from wholesale to selling to the general public. Marc Kreydenweiss took over in 1971 and pushed the wines towards a pure expression of their terroir, evolving into biodynamic viticulture and becoming founding president of the Biodyvin organisation in 1989.
