Monte Xanic is widely recognized as Mexico's first boutique winery, founded in 1988 by five partners with a singular ambition: to make the finest wine in Mexico.

Established in Valle de Guadalupe — a Mediterranean-climate valley in Baja California roughly 30 kilometers northeast of Ensenada — the estate helped ignite a regional wine revolution that transformed what had been a grape-growing area into one of Latin America's most exciting fine wine destinations.

Today, Monte Xanic farms sustainably across six ranches spanning the Valle de Guadalupe and Valle de Ojos Negros, marrying advanced enological technology with old-world craft.

The winery's name is a nod to xanic (pronounced "shan-eek"), the white wildflower that blankets the hillsides behind the estate each spring after seasonal rains.

Gran Ricardo is Monte Xanic's flagship wine and the most prestigious expression in its portfolio.

First produced in 1994, it was created as a tribute to Ricardo Hojel, one of the winery's founding partners, and has since earned international recognition across more than 50 medals at global competitions.

The wine draws fruit from specially selected blocks across both the Valle de Guadalupe and Valle de Ojos Negros, where Mediterranean conditions and diverse soils yield grapes of exceptional concentration and natural balance.

In the cellar, all fruit is hand-harvested and hand-sorted cluster by cluster and berry by berry. A five-day pre-fermentative cold maceration builds color and aromatic complexity before fermentation; eight days of post-fermentative maceration deepens structure.

The wine then ages for 18 months in new French oak barrels selected to complement rather than overshadow the fruit. The result is a wine designed — in the words of CEO Hans Backhoff — to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.
