About The Wine

In 1996, brothers Nick and Andy Peay set out along the California coast looking for the right place to grow great wine. They found it on a remote ridgetop in the far northwestern corner of the Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific, on land most people considered too cold, too wet, and too isolated to farm. They planted it anyway. Nick took on the vineyard, Andy took on the business, and Nick’s wife, Vanessa Wong, a UC Davis classmate who had trained in Bordeaux and made wine at Château Lafite Rothschild, Domaine Jean Gros, and Peter Michael, became the winemaker. Decades later, Peay is still a first-generation family estate, farmed organically and powered by the sun.

Syrah was never supposed to work here. The family planted it almost on a whim, unsure it would even ripen so close to the ocean. Today they tend just six acres of it, and the vines give back about half the yield typical of Sonoma County. Each year is a battle against fog, wind, and cold. But what this site gives in return is unmistakable: a savory, floral, deeply mineral Syrah that tastes like nowhere else in California. It is closer in spirit to the northern Rhône wines Vanessa loves than to anything else on the West Coast.

La Bruma, Spanish for “the fog,” is the more lifted and aromatic of Peay’s two Estate Syrahs. In 2022 the fruit was picked a few days early to capture its freshness, then aged quietly on its lees and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine opens with blackberry, violet, and lavender, then moves into cracked pepper, olive, graphite, and a touch of sea spray, all carried by bright acidity and fine tannins. Critics placed it among the best in the region, with Decanter awarding it 96 points. It is a wine shaped by one family’s stubborn belief in an impossible place, and it is ready to reward patience for a decade or more.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 La Bruma Syrah is a linear, lifted take on cool-climate Syrah, picked about five days earlier than the Estate bottling for added freshness. It opens with bright, tart blackberry aromas laced with savoury herbs and a subtle citrusy lift. In the glass, it glows a deep, intense purple, and the palate follows through with layers of citric zest, rusty, savoury undertones, and vibrant acidity. A touch of spice carries through the finish, adding just the right edge to this energetic, coastal Syrah. ~96 Decanter

Complex aromas of blackberry bush, spices, black olive tapenade and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and high-tension acidity that carries graphite, sea spray, cured meats and bay leaves. So pure and refined. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Displaying a saturated purple color, the 2022 Syrah La Bruma is packed with lavender oils, blackberries, and savory ripe fruit tones. Medium to full-bodied, it has real grip on the palate while still remaining approachable enough to drink well over the coming decade. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Syrah Estate La Bruma is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Intense red-toned fruit, blood orange, pomegranate, rose petal and exotic spices abound. There's gorgeous depth and density here. As always, La Bruma is a wine of textural presence more than anything else. ~93 Vinous Media

The 2022 Estate Syrah La Bruma has pretty aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, cracked pepper, powdered sugar and soaring violet perfume. The medium-bodied palate offers highly concentrated, floral flavors. It's framed by youthfully grippy tannins and juicy acidity, and it has a long finish with just a touch of warmth. 325 cases were made, and it will be released in August 2025. ~93 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Peay Vineyards

Perched on a remote ridgetop four miles from the Pacific, Peay Vineyards farms one of the most extreme sites on California’s West Sonoma Coast, high above the fog line, where cold ocean winds and ancient marine soils shape wines of rare precision. Founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Andy Peay, the estate is a true family endeavor: Nick farms the organic vineyard, while his wife, Vanessa Wong, crafts the wines, drawing on experience at Château Lafite Rothschild, Domaine Jean Gros, and Peter Michael. Every top bottling is estate-grown, selected blind from barrel, and made only from free-run juice. The result is a collection of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah defined by tension, purity, and depth, firmly among the benchmarks of cool-climate California.
