About The Wine

In 2002, two winemakers made an unlikely bet. Jorge Roquette ran Quinta do Crasto, one of the Douro Valley's most respected estates. Jean-Michel Cazes ran Château Lynch-Bages, a Pauillac classified growth that has punched well above its ranking for decades. They decided the Douro needed a wine built with Bordeaux's playbook — and put the idea into practice with a bottle.

The result is Roquette & Cazes: a wine that speaks Douro but thinks Bordeaux. The grapes are pure native Portuguese — 60% Touriga Nacional (think of it as Portugal's answer to Cabernet Sauvignon, the country's most noble red grape), 25% Touriga Franca, and 15% Tinta Roriz, all hand-harvested from Quinta do Crasto's hillside parcels at 120 to 450 meters elevation. The winemaking crosses continents: Lynch-Bages' winemaker Daniel Llose works alongside Quinta do Crasto's Cátia Barbeta and Manuel Lobo. The technique is Bordeaux through and through — délestage fermentation, post-fermentation maceration for texture refinement, 18 months in French oak (35% new). The Douro provides the raw material. Lynch-Bages provides the frame.

The 2022 growing season was extreme — Portugal hit 46.5°C at Pinhão, the highest temperature ever recorded in the country. Most vines struggled under the pressure. Quinta do Crasto's old vines didn't. Their deep root systems found moisture that shallow soils couldn't reach. A critical rainfall in September's second week restored balance at exactly the right moment. The 2022 came through with moderate alcohol, balanced acidity, stable color, and what the winemaking team calls "fantastic elegance." Difficult years have a way of stripping out everything except what matters.

Touriga Nacional leads at 60%, with Touriga Franca at 25% and Tinta Roriz at 15% — all hand-harvested from old-vine parcels across 120 to 450 meters of Douro hillside.

Deep ruby in the glass with an intense and complex nose: vibrant fresh red fruits, violets, and delicate fine spice, with a soft toasty undercurrent from the French oak.

The palate opens with elegance and builds into a robust, well-defined structure held together by silky, fine-grained tannins. The finish is fresh and persistently long — balanced, enveloping, and clean. Decant 30–45 minutes before serving at 16–18°C.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A red blend composed of Touriga Nacional (60%), Touriga Franca (25%), and Tinta Roriz (15%) grapes, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. In a warmer year like 2022, it shows good concentration of ripe red and black fruits, with its excellent acidity and tense, fine tannins providing fluidity to the wine and overall structure. Structured, yet harmonious and refined, it has a succulent and persistent finish with toasted, earthy, floral, balsamic, sweet spice, blackberry, and plum notes. Alcohol 14%. ~ 94 Revista Adega
