About The Wine

Robert Mondavi — does he really need an introduction?

In 1966, Robert Mondavi established his eponymous winery with a visionary goal: to create Napa Valley wines that could rival the world’s finest. To fulfill this vision, he chose the iconic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, California, renowned for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

With over fifty years of leadership in California’s wine industry, Robert Mondavi Winery has earned its place as a premier institution, setting the standard for innovation and excellence. The To Kalon Vineyard consistently ranks among the world’s top vineyards, celebrated for its extraordinary terroir and role in shaping the identity of modern Napa Valley.

The legacy of Robert Mondavi lives on under the stewardship of Geneviève Janssens, Chief Winemaker and one of Napa’s most respected figures. With decades of experience—including her pivotal role in crafting the inaugural vintage of Opus One—Geneviève continues to uphold Mondavi’s founding philosophy: that wine is not just a product of the land, but a reflection of passion, culture, and time.

Today, that philosophy comes vividly to life in the 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted from premier vineyards across Oakville and Stags Leap—two of Napa’s most storied appellations—this wine captures the essence of Mondavi’s timeless style: power balanced by elegance, structure softened by finesse.

The 2022 growing season began mild and dry, with a warm, steady ripening period through summer. A brief August heatwave tested the vines, but the dedicated vineyard team’s precision farming ensured even ripening and optimal flavor development. Grapes were harvested by hand, followed by primary fermentation in tank, malolactic fermentation in barrel, and 18 months of aging in French oak (29% new). The result is a wine that honors Mondavi’s vision—a vibrant, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon that embodies both heritage and innovation.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A very good introduction to Napa Valley cabernet for drinkers who are unfamiliar. This offers ripe, generous red and black fruit on a velvety texture of fine-grained tannins. Black cherries, dark plums, and blackberries come up in the aroma and then go deeper on the palate. Contains 7% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. Aged in all French barrels, 31% new, which adds accents of cinnamon and cedar. ~ 92 James Suckling

The 2022 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was tasted with Kurtis Ogasawara, Director of Winemaking, who joined Mondavi in 2015 after previous roles at Newton and Chandon. A solid representation of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine sources fruit from St. Helena down to Carneros, with the bulk of the blend coming from the Wappo Hill property in Stags Leap. All five Bordeaux varieties are included in the blend. Fermentation begins with a cold soak in stainless steel, followed by 26 days on skins, and 18 months of ageing in 31% new French oak. The wine opens with powerful Kirsch aromatics, lifted by bright Bing cherry, warm baking spices, new wood cedar, and white pepper. It is plush and layered on the palate, with black-toned fruit and robust, lingering tannins that carry through a long finish of dark red and black fruit, warming spices, and mineral tension. A balanced expression of power and fruit-forward ripeness, this vintage showcases both depth and structure, making for a bold yet polished Napa Cabernet. ~ 92 Decanter
