About The Wine

Seghesio Family Vineyards has been farming Alexander Valley since 1886, when Edoardo Seghesio left Piedmont for California. In 1895, he planted the first Zinfandel vines at Home Ranch — the same vines that anchor this wine 129 years later. Five generations. Original-block fruit. One of a hundred wineries that survived Prohibition by selling grapes and grape concentrate, then made the call in 1993 to cut production to 30,000 cases and focus exclusively on estate vineyards. This is what legacy tastes like.

Home Ranch sits on shallow topsoil — eight to sixteen inches — over fractured layers of basalt, sandstone, and volcanic rock. The vines struggle. The fruit concentrates. Alexander Valley Zinfandel at this level of intensity and complexity doesn't come from deep, rich soil; it comes from old vines fighting for every nutrient. The 2022 is built around those 1895 blocks, with fruit so dense Wine Spectator called it out at 94 points and noted it'll cellar through 2032.

In the glass: ripe blackberry and a light dusting of graham cracker on the nose, then energetic red berry notes that open into a plush mid-palate with integrated tannins. The finish is where it shows its pedigree — mouthwatering acidity, lingering dark chocolate cacao, and the kind of structure that lets you cellar this for years or pull the cork tonight. Deep flavors of blackberry, dark mocha, and licorice build toward a potent finish. This is Zinfandel at the heights.

Only 1,803 cases made. The wine that proves what old-vine Alexander Valley fruit can do when it's farmed by the family that planted it in the 1800s.
