About The Wine

Today, the wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Rhone, are recognized for their unique character and exceptional quality, with Robert Parker calling it "one of the world's most prestigious appellations.”

Founded by Raymond Usseglio in 1963, Domaine Raymond Usseglio et Fils traces its roots back to the wine-rich soil of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. From the sun-kissed vineyards where Francis Usseglio first planted his roots in 1948 to the present-day stewardship of Stephane Usseglio, each generation has woven its story into the fabric of this esteemed domaine.

Stephane Usseglio, guided by a deep reverence for the land and a commitment to organic practices, tends to vines that range from 50 to over 110 years old. Situated on both the historic "La Crau" and the picturesque slopes overlooking the ruins of the Pope's castle, these vines thrive in diverse soils, each contributing its unique character to the final blend.

The 2018 Stephane Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Fragments is inspired by the finesse of Burgundy, each bottle embodies the meticulous attention to detail and the pursuit of elegance that defines Domaine Raymond Usseglio et Fils.

Beyond mere viticulture, biodynamics at Domaine Raymond Usseglio et Fils is a way of life—a commitment to nurturing the earth, honoring natural cycles, and fostering harmony between humanity and nature.

80% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Counoise.

Deep ruby in the glass with a brooding garnet edge. The nose opens on intense baking spice — clove, cinnamon, black pepper — layered over ripe black raspberry, dark plum, garrigue, sandalwood, and a savory note of crushed stone.

The palate is full-bodied and structured, with massive but fine-grained tannins, generous black and red fruit, and a long, savory finish lifted by surprisingly fresh acidity. Built for the long haul. Decant 1–2 hours if drinking now; truly ready from 2026 onward.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Deep and earthy, with intense baking spice aromas, this has a massive tannin structure, yet there is nothing exaggerated about the wine. It needs some time for the richness and structure to completely integrate, but the finish is already bold yet fine-grained. Excellent aging potential. A cuvee of 80% grenache plus syrah, mourvedre and counoise. From organically grown grapes. Matured in concrete tanks and amphorae. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. ~ 95 James Suckling
