About The Wine

Here's the shortcut serious Spanish-wine buyers eventually learn: if you want Vega Sicilia's DNA without paying Único money, you buy Alión.

Some background on why that name carries weight. Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864, planted with Bordeaux vines alongside the local Tinto Fino, and it's been Spain's benchmark red ever since — the estate Hugh Johnson likened to Château Latour. The Álvarez family bought it in 1982, and instead of coasting on the legend, they kept building.

Alión was their 1991 move: a separate winery, right next door, built to make a modern, unapologetically 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) Ribera del Duero. Same family, same standards, different address. The fruit is a mosaic of the region's best sites, from Soria in the east to the Vega Sicilia estate itself.

Running it all is Gonzalo Iturriaga, the group's technical director since 2015 and the hand behind today's Vega Sicilia and Alión. In 2016 the owner asked him a simple question — how do we make Alión better? His answer was a new cellar with 42 different vessels: barrels, concrete, foudres, even a granite egg, so each village and vineyard gets raised on its own terms before the final blend.

2022 was a warm, dry, "solar" year, and the team leaned in carefully: softer extraction, larger oak formats, a slug of concrete to hold the freshness. The result runs rounder and more opulent than usual — dense black fruit, graphite, and a polished, slightly dusty tannin that gives grip without weight.

Just 270,870 bottles made. Decant it and it drinks now, but it's built to run to 2040.

This is Ribera del Duero at the level most people only read about.

100% Tempranillo.

Profound and floral on the nose — graphite, ripe blackberry, dark plum and dark chocolate, with a violet lift. Full-bodied and warm, with round, polished, slightly dusty tannins and bright acidity holding the frame.

The finish is long and precise: black tea, licorice, sweet spice and a mineral, graphite edge. Decant now, or give it two or three years — it rewards patience through 2040.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The Alión vintage released in 2026 is the 2022 Alión, a year they consider a challenge, a warm and dry year when ripeness didn't follow the usual pattern: late vineyards ripened earlier and early vineyards took longer this year. Their obsession was to keep the freshness in the wine, and they did a softer vinification and a more careful use of oak, using larger volumes and other materials like concrete to tame a powerful and solar vintage. The nose is serious and even has some austerity. The wine is obviously juicier and rounder, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.89 and 4.58 grams of acidity, but has very good overall balance. The tannins are round, polished and slightly dustier than other vintages, the wine has a tender mouthfeel. ~95 Wine Advocate

Alíon is very much a pan-Ribera red, based on grapes from Moradillo, with other components from Padilla, Pesquera, Peñaranda, Villálvaro and the Vega Sicilia estate. Gonzalo Iturriaga used only 70% new wood in 2022 because of the concentration of the vintage, producing a Tempranillo that's appealingly refined and floral, all subtle aromatic spices, bramble and summer berry flavours and a focused finish. ~ 94 Tim Allen, Master of Wine

A structured and chewy wine from this challenging hot, dry year. On the nose it is profound and floral at the same time, with graphite, blackberries and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and tightly wound. Give it two or three more years. ~ 93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is located in the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen in the Province of Valladolid, Castile and León, northern Spain. The Álvarez family are members of the Primum Familiae Vini. The name Vega refers to the green vegetation that grows along the riverbank of the Duero; Sicilia refers to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians.

The winery has no connection to the island of Sicily or Italian wines. Launched in 1991, Alion was conceived as a bold experiment to create the most contemporary style of Ribera del Duero while preserving the tradition of its legendary parent, Vega Sicilia. Located 15 km from Vega Sicilia, on the road to Peñafiel in the heart of the Ribera del Duero.
