About The Wine

If you know Nebbiolo, you know Vietti. And if you don’t—this is where you begin.

These are not just wines. They are time capsules of terroir, sculpted with precision and reverence by one of Italy’s most iconic estates. Vietti’s single-vineyard expressions are must-haves for any serious collector—delivering Grand Cru-level quality at a fraction of what you'd pay in Burgundy.

“Vietti makes some of the cleanest, most terroir-driven wines in Piedmont, with a rare subtlety and elegance.” ~ Wine Spectator

Founded in the 1800s, Vietti’s destiny changed forever in 1960 when Luciana Vietti married Alfredo Currado—one of the founding fathers of modern Barolo. Alfredo’s legacy is legend: he was among the first to bottle Barolo by cru, showcasing the individuality of Piedmont’s grand vineyards long before it became fashionable.

Luca Currado, Vietti’s former winemaker, brought a résumé that reads like a global wine hall of fame—Opus One, Mouton Rothschild, Simi—before returning to his roots to craft wines that Forbes has called “some of the finest Italian wine labels.” Under his leadership, Vietti earned its place among the “25 Best Barolo Producers” in the world.

Continuing this legacy, Eugenio Palumbo, with over 23 years at Vietti, has been instrumental in the winery’s success. After the Krause family took over in 2016, Eugenio expanded the estate with sought-after Barolo and Barbaresco Crus and launched the Derthona Timorasso project. Today, he builds on Vietti’s rich heritage, crafting wines that combine tradition with innovation.

These wines are pure, poised, and profoundly expressive. They are, quite simply, what Nebbiolo was always meant to be. Own a piece of Barolo history.

Monvigliero is the crown jewel of Verduno—a revered cru long considered one of the finest sites in all of Barolo. With south to southwest exposure, limestone- and clay-rich soils, and the famed Marls of Sant’Agata, the vineyard sits at 240 metres elevation.

This site is located at the furthest north site in Barolo zone and is historically prized for whole-cluster fermentation. In 2022, about 60% of the fruit went in as whole clusters, and the wine spent 24 months in wood before bottling. It comes in at 14.5%, with Monvigliero’s trademark perfume and a fine, zesty line of acidity.

Kyle Krause purchased Vietti in 2016. If you don’t recognize his name, you likely know his family business called Kum n’ Go gas stations. This was sold in 2024. He also purchased the luxury Casa di Langa resort and spa, Parma soccer team, and Enrico Serafino in Canali.

100% Nebbiolo, with about 60% whole clusters, aged 24 months in wood.

Fragrant and floral on the nose, with mint and menthol over red fruit, a little iron and cedar. Cherry, raspberry and plum on the palate, with blood orange running right through it and a savory, herbal edge from the stems. The tannins are fine-grained, the acidity is zesty, and the finish is long with a tart snap.

Needs a year or two to soften. Best from about 2028, with a good run into the early 2040s.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A sparkling, medium-intensity ruby red with garnet highlights. An appealing nose with pronounced spicy notes, hints of raspberry, rose petals, and blood orange, along with a touch of pine needles. Juicy and polished on the palate, with plenty of blood orange, followed by fine-grained tannins; well-structured, with a long finish and good tension.~ 97 Falstaff

The 2022 Barolo Monvigliero is a distinctly different expression within the range. Influenced by the Tanaro River and produced with roughly 60% whole cluster fermentation, it pours a paler ruby hue. Aromas of preserved strawberries, sweet cinnamon, floral perfume, Mediterranean herbs, saline, and licorice emerge from the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh and elegant, with a supple texture and refined spice as the stems achieve greater ripeness in this site. 5,500 bottles were produced. Drink 2026-2038. ~ 95 Jeb Dunnuck

Warmed strawberries, currant jam and roses fill the glass with generous, unhurried warmth. The palate opens quickly and fully, cherry fruit rich and deeply textured, nothing held back, juicy tannins threading through with easy elegance. Pull the cork for a leg of lamb slow-roasted until it gives up without a fight. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

An overt, fruity profile, rich with fresh red cherries, smashed blood oranges and aromatic herbs, enhanced by licorice. Medium-bodied on the palate, showing angular tannins with crisp acidity and an austere yet toasted finish. Best after 2026. ~ 94 James Suckling

To an already dizzying list of Barolo’s most lauded sites, Vietti added Monvigliero in 2018. A plot of just over half a hectare is comprised of vines with an average age of 44 years old. The 2022 is just so classically fragrant and expressive. Pepper, strawberry blossom, pressed rose and beeswax waft headily. Lightweight but not lacking in flavour, the palate surges with red forest berries sprinkled with mint. Zesty, citrussy acidity makes the mouth water. Crisp tannins have a snappy firmness yet this glides with grace. Exceptionally precise and complex. ~ 94 Decanter

One of the newer additions to Vietti's Barolo portfolio, the 2022 Barolo Monvigliero is quickly establishing itself among the estate's most compelling wines. The warm, dry vintage lends the wine a more open and immediate personality than usual. Monvigliero's hallmark floral character is still evident, but instead of fresh, lifted violets, the bouquet leans toward candied flowers and dried petals, recalling sun-drenched bougainvillea with hints of green tea. Those warm-vintage signatures make for a charming and approachable expression, while the tannins remain fine and polished. Aged for 24 months in large oak casks, it is produced in 5,522 bottles. ~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Menthol and mint are the top notes in this savory red, rooted in cherry, plum and earth flavors. Fluid and combines elegance and intensity. There’s fine balance, with its savory elements echoing on the lingering finish. ~ 94 Wine Spectator

The 2022 Barolo Monvigliero is another very pretty wine in this range from Vietti. Floral notes meld into crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint, rose petal, sage and chalk. The 60% stems are not especially evident in the aromatics or flavor profile, although they do lift the wine nicely. I don't see quite the dimension of the best Barolos in this range, but the Monvigliero is nevertheless a success in this very challenging year. ~ 93 Vinous Media
