About The Wine

Antica Terra's Antikythera Pinot Noir comes from one of Oregon's most uncompromising sites: 11 acres of ancient marine sediment in the Eola-Amity Hills, fractured sandstone studded with fossilized oyster shells, no topsoil. Maggie Harrison — eight years at Sine Qua Non before relocating north in 2005 — farms the vineyard Demeter-certified biodynamic and calls the vines "bonsais," their growth held in check by Pacific winds and volcanic poverty. The result is a wine that, in her words, "has a moat around it in terms of typicity."

Antikythera is the flagship, first released from the 2009 vintage. It defies the Willamette playbook: extreme, high-pitched cinnamon-stick aromatics, Barolo-like tannin, intensely mineral — a wine that resembles the fractured seabed from which it was born more than it does conventional Oregon Pinot. Harrison amplifies what she calls the "site voice," sorting berry-by-berry and releasing only when the wine is ready, not when the calendar says so.

The 2023 vintage is more plush and forward than recent years, showing layered red and dark fruit with saline minerality and earthy undertones. The tension between concentration and elegance remains: fine-grained tannins, persistent length, and a precision that makes most Pinot feel soft by comparison. On the palate, red cherry and pomegranate are framed by pronounced spice and a mineral backbone, the grip firmer than the grape typically allows.

This is Pinot Noir for the collector who doesn't need it to taste like every other bottle in the cellar — a wine that speaks to the ground first, the varietal second, and the drinker who's ready for something singular.

Red cherry and pomegranate framed by pronounced spice and a mineral backbone. Medium- to full-bodied, powerful yet elegant, with a Barolo-like grip and persistent length.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Pinot Noir Antikythera delivers a mesmerizing mix of flowery underbrush, olive and sage that gives way to blood orange, blackberries and a whiff of chalk dust. It is youthfully poised yet complex, with an ethereal feel and depths of mineral-soaked wild berry fruit, taking on a nearly crunchy feel toward the close. Structured and incredibly long, the 2023 Pinot Noir Antikythera leaves sweet tannins and a subtle tangerine tinge as the senses salivate for more. Lose this in the cellar and reap the rewards.  ~97 Vinous Media

THE PRODUCER

Antica Terra

Antica Terra was established in 2005 by Scott Adelson, John Mavredakis, and Michael Kramer. Vines were first planted in 1989 on the property, an 11 acre vineyard on pre-historic seabed in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Maggie Harrison became the winemaker after being convinced by the three partners to visit the property. Maggie Harrison decided to become a winemaker after an inspired moment during a nervous breakdown, after a bout with malaria, on an island off the coast of Kenya. Antica Terra is an 11 acre vineyard located on a rocky hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon's Willamette Valley. The first vines were planted in 1989 in a clearing within the oak savannah.
